View Full Version : Question to the Forum - Wrecks??

Hi Guys,
I was rather hoping you might point me in the right direction.
Unless I'm missing something, I've noticed that there doesn't appear to be any provision on these boards for convo's or Q&A's on wrecks or wreck diving! BSAC's 50 years old (Happy B'Day btw) and has some of THE world renowned wreck divers amongst its ranks - so why not 'share the wealth' in terms of knowledge?
So please tell me if I am missing something very obvious or whether there is any particular reason why we don't have a dedicated 'Wrecks' forum on these boards??
Cheers in advance,
Bren.

Yes Allan, lots of information, but not a route for dedicated discussion etc on wrecks as per Bren's comment.

Hey Al,
Quick hint: everyone who comes here might not necessarily be au fait with the site or a BSAC member; but as you're on the worldwide-web, you already knew that, right?
Gonna do me a favour and let me in on where the obvious URL for the 'INFORMATION' section is??? You've got sections for:
* General
* Instructors
* Club Matters
* Go Diving
* In Depth
* Travel Club
* Forums Home......?
Err...and where's the 'home page'? Do we have a URL for this too?? Oh, and 'Dive Planning Resource Centre' - so where dat at??
Can you see yet why I can't easily find a 'Wrecks Forum' on your pages - even after having reached the 'Forums' section?? Can you see why it needs to be a reduction in the 3 or 4 steps you promote it might take me and 'F Branch' of MI5 to locate such a beast??? Hope so. Don't think of you, think of the user - and we're ALL dumb in one respect or another, regardless of what we might claim to the contrary!
And even if you have such a page, why isn't it here (OBVIOUS) amongst the rest of your fora?? Members/users/posters might want quick and easy access to/interogation of/perusal of a vital and information-rich/1st-hand-experience/interactive-Q&A resource - and not just the hard-coded 'facts as we print them of wrecks various to various depths' version of events. What about the diver who hits a wreck and finds it to be completely different to that which BSAC has 'printed' here?? If you'd provided a free-n-easy info-exchange forum (like those listed above), that diver might have asked and recieved the heads-up he/she needed for the dive.
This (the BSAC) forum and 'another place' share exactly the same Webmaster (young Michael), and precisely the same s/w package and format - so why not the same set of member/user options (given that they exist)??
We look forward to your response.
Cheers,
Bren.

But if you look at the top of the main page of this forum, you'll see the wording "The place to discuss matters of general interest to BSAC members". This is a members' site; that it is public doesn't make it any less so. Non-members are accepted (I got away with it for long enough!), but it is still primarily a site for BSAC members. As such, it's a bit rich complaining that is is member-centric in its replies...
> Gonna do me a favour and let me in on where the obvious URL

Other fora would tend to give you a "STFW" reply here (if you don't understand the acronym, STFW!)
> Err...and where's the 'home page'?
Take a guess... Or follow the link on any of the fora index pages.

Because they are different groups of users - this is a members' area; the other is not.
Additionally, many (most?) of us are perfectly capable of navigating between the two sets of fora; it would be bad news indeed if they were identical.

Hey Al/Vic
I stand by my original statement: this may very well be a 'member's' website, although, if we are going to use that hoary old chestnut by way of explanation, the simple redress is to say (without diluting its 'memberness') that it opens itself to the public at large for use, ergo it can't try and 'defend' itself with your retort against any questions submitted by non-members or those not au fait with the site.
I'm not a member, I came on here looking for something (a whole section as it turns out!) and didn't find finding it obvious - you know that one, don't you Vic/Al - the one where you make things idiot-proof for the members/public (seeing as you've seen fit to open it up to them and allow them access) so they use it? And, as far as I can see, the BSAC 'wreck' section is a read-only (i.e. non-interactive) link to another dive Magazine's website! Err...that being the main premise of my question - does the BSAC have a wreck forum....of it's own?
And nobody even suggested or hinted that just because BSAC are kind enough to open this forum up to non-members makes it in any way less a member's site - so I've no idea where you're going with that tack mate??
Acronymns and TLA's Vic?? You know what they say mate, live by 'em, die by 'em; failing that, speak English ;-)
> Err...and where's the 'home page'?
Take a guess... Or follow the link on any of the fora index pages.
Err....Homepages, at least in the rest of the web-centric world, actually say 'Homepage'! We work in allied industries, Vic, so are we gonna take the edge off the smart-ass now?
Because they are different groups of users - this is a members' area; the other is not.
To which 'other' do you refer?? Divernet?? If you do mean the latter, just because D-net users are not 'paid-up in subs' makes them no less a 'member' of that site. Different groups of users I can see, but nonetheless, this is a member's area that gives access to non-members......including those who ask direct and sentient questions when the source of which they might seek is not immediately apparent or obvious.
Additionally, many (most?) of us are perfectly capable of navigating between the two sets of fora; it would be bad news indeed if they were identical.
I'm not gonna open a tangent debate on the screaming similarities between this forum and 'another place' in terms of format and posting, even you can see that Vic. I didn't come here looking for a ruck, Vic, I came with questions. Guess I'll just have to take those same questions away......
Dive safe mate.

Nice P.R. job Vic, how to make friends and influence people eh?
Yeah Bren , you're not one of "us" so sling yer 'ook, Manc boy, and take your constructive suggestions with you, this is a local forum for local divers, we'll have no trouble here! ;) LMAO

Hi Vic
Have to totally agree with Bren and Steve here. The site is hard to Navigate and i know that there are a lot of "Senior" (probably the wrong word) members who have lots of wreck information they are more than happy to pass around. The wreck information is not very good, and a lot of the links are out of date (KL could you trim them down?).
Members forum? Lets get real we need more members so why try to give a closed door approach, this is exactly what i have to fight against as DO with potential new members.
I think Bren has raised a major failing in our site, and one that could be easily improved.
Regards and safe diving,
Paul

There is -- it's called the Go Diving Forum. Why not start a thread about wreck diving there? There isn't a dedicated wreck forum, but equally there aren't reef, wall, quarry or drift dive forums either.
For static information, there is the Dive Planning Resource Centre, mentioned by Allan, which is linked to from BSAC's home page (not the BSAC forums home page). You can get to the home page by clicking on the Neptune logo at the top of the forum pages.

Hi Bren,
Now just let me understand the situation for clarity.
As a very welcome guest you came on our web site and asked a legitimate question and I pointed you to what is currently available and now, as a guest on our site and without even saying ?please? you abuse and insult not only our open site, not only the person that tries to point you in the right direction but also our members. This is like coming into someone?s house, drinking their hospitality and p??g on the carpet.
The home page is the first page of any website whether you call it a home page or a homepage; a rose by any other name is still a rose, etc. Once you find the home page (www.bsac.org/index) look half way down the middle column (that?s the column between the LHS and RHS column) and you will see the heading INFORMATION directly under this you will see DIVE PLANNING AND RESOURCE CENTRE.
In addition to this section there is also ?GO DIVING FORUM? on the forum sections. This is the place to discuss any diving topic including wreck diving. However, we do listen to constructive comments and for the benefit of all users of the web site we can quite easily open up a new forum site dedicated specifically to wreck diving ? what are the thoughts out there chaps? We can do anything if there is enough interest.
Cheers????.Allan

Someones got the good idea on the 'Go Diving Forum' of starting the thread with a KEY word... ie re Equipment
It could very well be... re Wrecks or...re Fluffy Stuf
What I consider would be helpful is a 'SEARCH' function so users, if interested, can pull up previous yip yap on a common theme.
Possible to do? Maybe not the call for it here?

There is a "Find" function (link on lowest of the blue menu bars at top of each forum). Funnily enough, it behaves pretty much like a search function!

So there is - thought on a dive site that title should be the hot link to Receiver of Wrecks.
