Hi everybody. I have just had a eureka moment. Blindingly simple idea that could save a divers life. It may or may not work but I need to find out some technical details before I can take the design further. It is difficult to know who to ask without losing control of the idea. I know that the first step should be to take out a patent but I believe to do that costs thousands which I haven't got.
Not wanting to give out any details, just in case, seeing as how, about five years ago I said to my husband what about some method of fixing solar panels (very small ones of course) on a shoulder strap/briefcase or handbag for recharging a mobile phone or camera etc. on the move. "Nah probably wouldn't work", he said . However I do believe that you can get something similar today which works on the same principle.
Could take it to Dragon's Den but too much of a coward. Anyway need to pursue comments in first paragraph.
I know that none of your good selves can help, just needed to get it written down because if I don't I'll forget all about it. Anyway, it's probably just another case of lost marbles. See previous post.
Will keep you updated if I get anywhere with it.
Cheers, Pat

I've no clue as to costs of patenting, but don't publish anything about your idea. Once it is in the public domain, you cannot patent it. Or words to that effect.

There are many threads that I scratch my head and wonder why the OP actually took the time to type it out and this one takes Number 1 place and has me asking why bother?
It costs nothing to file a patent until you ask for a patent search. Get it in now.

Some folk even argue that you are in a stronger position with respect to prior art if you do not do a search.

I think that's a result of US law.
Given the excessively over-broad nature of so many US patents[1], there's a fairly strong chance that *anything* you do will infringe someone's patent[2].
Under US law, if you infringe a patent, you're usually liable for damages - but if you *willfully* infringe, you're liable for triple damages. So, given the high probability of infringing somthing, it is very probably cheaper in the long run not to check whether or not you infringe...
Vic.
[1] This is slowly being addressed in the wake of In Re Bilski, but there were *thousands* of crazy patents issued by the USPTO - and not just subsequent to State Street, even if that was a major cause of legal silliness.
[2] Does your laptop fit in your glove box? Congratulations - you've just violated claim 1 of Microsoft patent 6175789.
The problem with a patent is if one of the big boys likes your Idea and infringes your patent, then it will bankrupt you to fight it
The patent does not fight the battle, you do and in the high court where the big boys play they will draw things out untill you run out of money

Take it to the Dragons Den, as soon as saving a life is herd they will open their eyes. Saw an example this afternoon ask them for advice rather than money and they will bite your hand off

You can copy write your idea by simply writing it all down (including as much detail including sketches etc.) and sending it recorded delivery to your self. Once you have done this you have proof of you having your idea on a particular data. The intellectual property then belongs to you. You are then a little more secure in discussing it with other people.
