Just a quick question to ask if these were legally required when carrying cylinders or just a good idea.

Just a quick question to ask if these were legally required when carrying cylinders or just a good idea.

I have seen advice that these must be displayed if the vehicle is being used for work purposes but need not be displayed otherwise. I have been intending to read and properly understand the Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road Regulations 1996 and the legislation it references for some time now, but it is a bit of an intimidating document.

If you do display a hazard symbol it MUST be the correct one (those with a picture of a diver or the BSAC/SAA logo are incorrect) and you MUST remove it from the vehicle or cover it when compressed gas is not being carried.

I did some research into this a while ago - if the vehicle is in use for work then you must display, is not its just a good idea.

This means if you are picking up cylinders in your lunch hour in your company car you need to display

BSAC Technical Information Sheet T.10 refers and should give the clubs answer to your question. It is available via the Technical Services section on the BSAC members web site, hope that helps you.

You may need to inform your Insurers that you carry cylinders. I ahve had to! Apparently in a recent case the insurers refused to cough up for damages because the driver failed to disclse a material fact.

I did my ADR Course 3 years ago for transport of gas cylinders/compressed gasses flamable gasses, unfortunatly tanks used for diving I.E Breathing air did not come up in the course, as the tank is classed as compressed air container you do need a licence to carry any type of cylinder for work or private use, the only time you dont need to display or need a licence for transportation is if you are carrying less than 200 liters. The best place to find out is to phone the local police station or find out from the FTA
