View Full Version : Snorkelling and sdc's
Hi all ,
tristan ask me to post something as i'm a snorkeller , so here goes .
What sdc's that scuba divers do, do you think , that snorkel divers should do.
Example .
I was doing a PRM course in northwales ( it was arranged by the north west region ) and members of Tameside Snorkel & Octopush Club attended this course and found it usefull and very informative , all had a good day and were well looked after by the course boss .
Courses that the snorkellers already do through our branch are
Boat Handleing
First Aid for Divers

Hi Neil,
Dive planning and Marshalling
Marine Biology and/or Marine Life Identification
Disability Awareness
Underwater Photography
Lifesaver Award
Chartwork and position fixing
All these can be just as relevant to snorkellers as divers, perhaps in slightly different ways in some instances.

Hi Neil,
Great to see some snorkel divers on here! Welcome! :)
I guess you are probably aware of the Snorkel Lifesaver and Advanced Snorkel Lifesaver which is similar to the course for scuba divers but obviously tailored for snorkel divers.
To go along with Boat Handling there is always the Diver Cox'n exam as at the end of the day there is no difference between dopping off and picking up snorkel divers with the exception that you don't have to lug someone else's twin-set into the boat :D. Similarly Chartwork and Position Fixing is a good course for anyone using boats - fun course and need not be just for divers.
The other one that comes to mind is Oxygen Administration, perhaps not so immediately obviously required for snorkel divers but a handy skill to have nonetheless when you are out with scuba divers and also to assist with any other potential drowning incidents, etc. If nothing else the CPR revision is always good.
Dive Planning and Marshalling is another that I can think of which could readily be adapted for Snorkeling.
Also there are the range of Snorkel Instructor Training Courses.
I would always be happy to welcome any snorkel diver members along to any of our Regional SDC's.
Cheers!
Dave

Hi Neil,
Thanks for kicking this forum off.
I've got a snorkel in my lit bag somewhere but I can't remember the last time I actually used it for snorkelling. I'm looking forward to hearing about what I'm missing out on.
Cheers,
Tristan

Hi Tristan,
You asked what you missed out on by not snorkelling, well how about freedom in the water without the clumbersome tank on your back and the worry of decompression. Most Scuba divers miss out on the most interesting part of marine life, that that exists between the surface and 10 metres. If they do a Scuba dive to less than 10 metres they feel as though they have not had a dive so they have to go deep.
It all depends what you want out of diving, both sports have there place, some of us enjoy both.

Hi Bob,
It was a bit tongue in cheek - but it got you to post again didn't it :) .
I'll have to take you up on that point about a 10 m dive not being a dive though. Looking back through my recent "dives" in my logbook I see that the deepest of my last 10 dives was a mere 13.7 m, and the shallowest only 6.7 m. Mind you I'm a bit strange - I like to take photos so enjoy the light near the surface, and I dive in Hong Kong, where we're lucky if we can see our buddy below 10 m.
Basically I enjoy just pootling about in the shallows - and the air goes much further that way I've found :D
Cheers,
Tristan

We do regularly dive to 8 meter max but then for about 2 - 2.5 hours and we think it is a dive well worse it looking at the corals and fish and stuff.

Standard BSAC Lifesaver involves a scuba rescue (unless there is a separate snorkel lifesaver).

Snorkelling has its own Lifesaver and Advanced Lifesaver Courses, identical to the Scuba ones but without the CBL. We also have our own Dive Marshal course. Some of us even go beyond Advanced Snorkel Instructor to Snorkel Instructor Trainer, and don't forget who trains the Snorkel Instructor Trainers, yes, you've guessed it, Snorkel Instructor Trainer Trainers, Hmmm there must be a better name for it?

Some Snorkel Instructors are also SDC Instructors, our Branch has Instructors who run First Aid for Divers, Boat Maintenance, Oxygen Administration, Marine Identification, as well as both Lifesaver courses and the Dive Marshal Course. We also have an Assistant Snorkel Instructor Course for 14 year olds and above which we run regularly.
Just a few of the courses we can actually instruct on as well as take part in. After all Snorkel Instructors are NQI's the same as Scuba Instructors.

At least your acronym's are better than
TIT - Trainee Instructor Trainer
you've got
SIT

You at least get well behaved dogs in the area, rather than howls of laughter!
