How do I calculate the biggest bulb I can get into my UK D4 torch and still get a decent burn time from? It's currently got a 5.8 watt bulb, but I can buy an 18 watt from the D4R, a 14 watt or even a 30 Watt from the D8R.

I've bought some 10,000 mAh rechargable D cell batteries but will they have the power to drive a brighter bulb?

Physics A level was a long time ago but power=volts*amps? so have I got 4.2 volt (4 x 1.2 volt D cells) and 10 amps of power (don't think its 4 x 10) so could I use the 30 watt bulb?

Bulbs will be specified in Volts and Watts. You must match the voltage to the bulb (or thereabouts) and then Watts / Voltage will give you the Amps.

Amphours (10 in your batteries) divided by Amps will give you burn time.

I'd seriously consider putting a LED bulb into your existing reflector if you can.

Should this be 4.8 volts ?

Whoops 4 x 1.2 is 4.8. I think the D8 is 9.6 v so I assume the bulbs for this are out of the question so it's probably the 18w bulb or get my soldering iron out and start fiddling with leds from here :

I'm fiddling about with a Cree R2 as we speak...

I did wonder about putting one of these

in my UKSL4 backup torch. It's cheaper than a replacment bulb.

We've been buying up UK400's (need to remove internal vanes) and UKD4's
and converting them to r's. With a new made up battery pack the max
wattage you can use is 18 watt.

That will easily do a 1 hour night dive, or a days UK diving.

Your biggest problem isnt the bulb, but the large number of contacts.
On the D4 you can remove the black base plate + contact plate on the
lighthead and make a solid tag-battery block.

That is after all what a bought UKD4r does. Dont reinvent the wheel, if you
want to convert a D4 to D4r, just copy the specs of a D4r.

I've got one of these in my UKSL4 -

Had to make a sleeve to go over the unit to pack it out a little bit & you must make sure you swap the battery polarity around (put batteries in the wrong way around).
