Hi all,
I have been (v slowly) working towards my sports diver qualificaiton since 2001. I did the sports diver lectures in 2002 (i think) and had a 3 of my qualifying dives signed off since then (in the old style blue qualification book). The trouble is that my club is quite small and also I havn't pestered people enough to get the final 2 of my sports diver qualifying dives as I would rather just go diving. However, someone mentioned to me the other month that as the sports diver qualifcation has changed since I started it, if I do not finish off my sports diver by November 2005 I will have to start the whole shebang again! Is this true???

First some clarification.
The 'new' Diver Training Programme come into being in October 2002.
At the time no date was given for the completion of training started before October 2002.
Late in 2004 the NDO announced that "support" for training programmes prior to October 2002 would no longer be supported after 1st January 2006 (there may be some special exemptions) by BSAC.
So back to your questions.
You have until the end of December to complete your SD under an older DTP.
You do NOT need to start SD again, but transfer over to the 'new' DTP. Your Diving Officer should be able to advice you on the additional training required (also see the Transition Table).

Robin,
I'm pleased to see that Edward's recollection of DOC is the same as mine, that "support for the teaching of the old syllabus ceases from 1.1.06". The report on this site is subtly different.
Now, if you, your DO and your instructor(s) agree that the work still left to be completed can be achieved without support from elsewhere, then I can't see a problem. However, if that is not the case, then I suggest you arrange between you to ensure the three remaining dives are completed.
You will still have more to do before starting DL under the 2002 syllabus, but that was always going to be the case.
Solely the view of one up-country OWI, nothing more.
With regards,
Mike

The wording was "support" and I said it, as leader of the DTG on NDC.
The wording of "support" was chosen as it was felt unfair by the NDC that instructors and coaches were required to know and continue teaching different training programmes.
Hence from 1st January 2006 the BSAC will only be supporting the latest one.
I also recollect that John Kermode, NI on the Isle of Man, has stated that he would be willing to travel anywhere to complete anyone's training as long as his instructor expenses were met at the appropriate BSAC rate by the student!

Thanks, Sean, for confirmation.
IIRC, "support" was not your only well-chosen word during that excellent presentation.

Hi Robin
I've got a some dives organised in Oct, Anglesey and Farnes at the moment. You're more than welcome to join us if you like and I'll try and get you sorted out with the qualifying dives you still need to do.
What part of the country are you from, and what dives are you outstanding.

Well, at the time, the then NDO indicated that there would be no time limit, which is not quite the same thing -- but that is water under the bridge now.

Thanks for your advice on this matter. I'm from the midlands, but would definately be willing to travel to the Farnes or Anglesey to get all these dives ticked off.
Thanks again.
