I am on an AI's course in Cumbrae soon and don't know the position regarding accommodation. An email request to BSAC hasn't produced a reply and I don't know who is organising the course.

Can anyone shed any light on how to book please.

When you (finally) get your course "pack", it should include details of local accommodation. Unfortunately, you'll probably get the pack "not as early as you'd like" (my words)

We had the same issue wrt South Wales, so contacted HQ and got them to send accomm details (I think by email) - theres normally one locn where the NIs stay and a list of others

Ed,
Don't worry, they usually base it at the watersports centre, just by the ferry, and there is good accomodation in the chalets there.
I can't see them having changed it. Have fun

Dave

Don't worry about anything - the local organiser is faultless (Hi Chris!), and will sort all of this out for you: don't do anything to orgainse it yourself!

Assuming all goes as last time:

Accomodataion will be in the Watersports Centre. Bunkhouses, with two bunks to a room, and 6 rooms to a bunkhouse. Each room has a sink, and a wardrobe for each occupant. There is a communal kitchen area, which has all the kit, but no supplies.

Cooked breakfast each morning, is of good quality, and will fill you up. Tea and coffee are available all the time in the main complex, if you don't mind making it yourself.

Packed lunches available, but we were so busy on the days that we had no time to eat them!

The drying area for your suit is fantastic: real warm air dry blowers left on all the time.

Cylinder fills are available at the Watersports Centre, but try and bring your own cylinder full at the start of the course.

Eating out is possible for the evening meals, but you will probably find that the instructors and you will go out as a group for an Indian one night and a Chinese the next. Cumbrae does not have a selection of eating places. I think that there are two chippies.

The staff at the Centre are really friendly and helpful - I'd recommend going there as a dive base any time.

If I've left anything out, e-mail me.

Good luck with the course!

Yes - accommodation at the water sport centre is booked, as is the chinese meal on the saturday night. But as Chris and I are on holiday, the chances are you won't get any e-mails till after we are back home.

I would recommend the Indian.

Why restrict yourself on a good thing?!

Phil

...because a good curry on two nights running may have serious repercussions on your buoyancy on the following day!

...and it will certainly reduce the number of people prepared to unzip your drysuit at the end of the day!

LOL

Back from St Kilda now had a great time.

I'm on the case and getting things going I'll get the Joining Instructions emailed out shortly, as soon as I get the list of candidates from HQ.

On the curry front, if you time it right you don't need to waste valuable breathing gas on suit inflation, not sure of the thermal properties though ;-)

See you at Cumbrae.

Cheers

Ah - but your wrong - just becuase you move the gas from inside to outside your body does not alter the volume of gas in the dry suit!

Come on - you know I am always right!

True!
But I certainly have less control over the movement of gas in my gut than I do over the movement in and out of my lungs!

It still leaves the problem of finding a volunteer to crack open your drysuit zip at the end of the day too!
(Maybe that's why my wife insisted I get a suit with an over the shoulder zip that I could undo myself????)

But...
Not that I am saying your WRONG but...

It is more the production of the gas in the gut rather than the expulsion ;-)

Wonder if ststic electricity and 'gas' is something to wory about, must try my new Nylon undersuit!
