I'm about to embark on a SADS course at Fort Bovisand, and just want a refresher on a typical SEEDS brief for UK diving. My usual SEEDS Brief(for tropical diving) as follows:
Safety: Ears/mask squeeze on descent;dodgy fish;sharp edges/urchins;anything wrong(point at problem)
Exercise:Outline of dive;any skills/drills or training;max depth and time
Equipment: BAR(Bouyancy;Air:Releases);any other eqpt
Discipline:Ascent/descent rate;where I want you(left or right)
Signals:OK;up;down;something wrong;out of air;stop;50bar reserve;100bar(1 finger);shark;moray;turtle;dolphin;octopus;crayfis h

This may seem a daft request but I haven't dived in UK conditions for a while so would appreciate any feedback.
Best regards
Ian

Most of your SEEDS seems to have the basics however the SAFETY aspect should relate to an on-site risk assesment of the location and platform you are diving from. ie if descending down a ladder ensure correct positioning of feet, when ascending a ladder into a hardboat be careful of trapping fingers etc. There are too many potential hazards which could be a risk for me to cover, however if you go to the BSAC website there is a section on Risk Assesments, I suggest you take a look at it and be aware of what is required.

A useful site for you to visit is ukdivers.net go to agencies in the headers then lessons, there are 45 lesson plans all with seeds briefs.

I suggest you get out and do some diving to familiarise yourself with UK conditions.

If you need any other help/advice drop me a line, I'm more than happy to help.

I wouldn't try to think too much about brief's in advance unless you know the specific dive and location. For safety there are hundreds of potential things to mention, obviously exercises will change, for equipment just point out anything special during the brief (do the buddy check later), signals are fine but I wouldn't expect to cover everything unless you were teaching novices (and non-essential signals for animals and things i'd let them pick those up as they go along rather than trying to teach them during the brief).

Got some great info amd I'm sure you can make up an edited
version or just print out No.34.

I tend to use the seeds brief in a different but i think a more logical order.
E- Excercise the task you are going to perform or objective
E- Equipment required for dive or task
D- dicipline during the dive
S- Safety prior to and during the dive
S- Signals special ,instructional and diving sinals.

and obviously all the other relevant bits associated with each catagory
it tells everyone
what your doing , equipment required for the task, how your going to undertake the task, how to do it safely and signals involved
it works for me

Hi Stretch

If you're doing the pre SADS first you will be able to find out the hot poop while you are there. The pre-SADS is supposed to help you prepare for the SADS assessment so there is more teaching on it.

FWIW when I was there, the SEEDS brief was what it needed to be for the dive and buddy concerned: ie I wouldn't exepect you to be telling an advanced diver to remember to clear his ears/ be aware of mask squeeze during the descent. I used how people were able to change the brief according to who and where and what they were diving with as an indicator of how switched on and aware they were.

Don't get too worried about the SEEDS brief. It is only a small part of the picture.....

If you have any more Qs give me call at Henlow gym
Steve

Thanks to all who gave mew advice.I had a good week at Bovi even though the weather was crap for most of it. I've learnt some valuable lessons which I hope to put to good use later in the year on the SADS assessment.
Once again, thanks very much.
