Well I booked a last minute seat at the BioRock reef restoration conference in Gili Trawangan starting Dec. 1-7. I will be getting a few days diving in as well with Bali Diving Academy in Pemuteran.

First time in Bali and looking forward to it.

The conference on reef restoration is particularly timely as we have just had a "red tide" (Likely brown algea but they are still water testing) move through and kill large numbers of fish and completely bleach the coral in a matter of a couple of weeks. Lush natural aquariums turned into bone-yards. :(

Any feedback would be appreciated. I've had a look at a number of trip reports, etc.

Hi Michael
Let us know how it all goes - a new trip report would be great.

Hi Michael,

I went to Bali many years ago but it was fifteen years ago and pre-diving so not much help.

I know where we stayed you walked for miles into the sea to get wet up to your knees!

I remember being told lots of Australians dived there.

We did do snorkelling off Lombok which is nearby which was very pretty (other than being caught in the middle of a drift of jellyfish!) and it looked like there was a wall down there.

Sorry - not much help...

best wishes,

Maria

Hi Michael,

I am one of those Australians who has dived in Bali (& other parts of Indonesia).

In Bali, I would recommend the 'Liberty' shipwreck at Tulamben (east end of north coast) & Pulau Menjangan (just west of Pemuteran).

Have not dived Lombok where Gili Trawangan is located - feedback from other divers is relatively positive.

I first leant to dive at Gili Trawangan back in 1995.

I remember it as a great place, with fantastic colourful coral reefs. Very remote. No roads or electricity.

I hear its changed a lot since then though, so I'll look forward to reading your trip report in January.

Menjangan is good wall diving. There is also a mock underwater "temple" out of Pemuteran that has some growth and fish life on it, not a bad dive.

Check out the turtles at Chris Brown's ReefSeen Aquatics outfit at Pemuteran. Chris has been a key player in restoring the reef.

You will find Pemuteran really quiet and hassle free. Or it was 18 months ago...
