If you have a hand-held VHF radio you could teach the operation and use of all the controls (without actually transmitting of course) and then finally (if you can get hold of a hand-held dictaphone) practice putting out a Mayday call and listening back to it. This makes it an interactive session and allows students good practice - maybe you could take the role of the Coastguard co-ordinator.

How about briefly explaining the new GMDSS facility. Not many divers are aware of it. Lots of good info on the net about it.
