Hi, was wondering if has anyone used the hummingbird range of side scan sonar, are they as clear and readable as in the glossy brochure? :o

Speaking to someonw who has one the other day and he says it is good, BUT max useful depth about 30m for the pretty images.

Hi, did you buy one? If so what do you think of it? We are also considering one so any info you have would be very welcome. If the useful depth is 30m max (see IanC's reply) for side scan images I don't think we could justify the price difference against a bog standard fishfinder.

I am looking for something specific at depth of 75 meters. Rep at dive show said it would identify it but picture would not be as pretty as in brochure. usefull bit of kit but liked the starfish better tho too much dough for me at £2000. They said it was very good to 50 meters. www.starfishsonar.com After looking into it lots the hummingbird did seem a worthwhile peice of kit and I will buy one eventually. good luck, John

Was also advised that the hummingbird no good over 30m

Told that also the starfish not that good over 40m (hull mount not tow fish). However should have one on evaluation for a couple of weeks, thjough it is going to have to be VERY good before we invest that much money, and you need a PC to connect to it so not suitable for RIB's :-(
(target range most interested in is 40-70m)

If the weather lets us play I will let you know results

We tried the starfish out last year - towed version - got very good results in shallow water (10-15m), but not so good below that - our "expert" thought this was because the tow cable supplied was too short and we couldn't get the fish deep enough......

We're looking at the Humminbird at the moment, so any feedback welcome :)
