Phil,
When you register your course with HQ, inform them that you need the new boat handing course materials and Alistair Reynolds will post them to you. You will need to be a Boat handling Instructor already to get them. Not Much has changed you will have to read the Instructor Notes to see. However, no Chart work now.

What's the situation if you have done boat handling under the old system - do we need to do Diver Cox'n under the old rules as well - or the new?

and is the new one very different to the old?

Any chance of anyone else getting a look? If the syllabus has changed how are people supposed to know if we want to do a course without knowing what's in it? Hard to recommend to my members "go and do a BSAC Boat Handling course" rather than any other they might consider when no one can tell them what it consists of.

Does it really matter what the course consists of surely its not going to be that different, but very worthwhile doing.
I ask the question as a boat handling instructor, there is no issue i was just interested and i know these are available from hq and just wondering if anyone was aware of the new changes
cheers

Phill,

I am Branch TO and ABI (old-style), RYA Day Skipper and Level 3 Powerboat.

I was arranging a few months ago for some DC assessments to be taken and had the opportunity to ask about BH, DC and ABI. Nothing changes, or so I was told, anyone who has status now retains that status. Anyone who was formerly fit to upgrade status will be unaffected by the change. Anyone who has not heard of SOLAS and Voyage Planning by now will have a problem, but hey they've already got that.

I did get a very swift glimpse recently at the BH Instructor Notes. They appear to be a great improvement, IMHO. However, their content didn't seem very different, just changed emphasis.

Do boat handlers have to do the RYA GMDSS VHF radio course?

Doesn't matter a whole lot in general, but I can't see why a general syllabus can't be made available as for every other SDC BSAC run.
Personally I've half-done the 'old' boat handling course, but I didn't get round to doing the actual day out on the boat due to the weather / time / instructor availability. I want to see what is different in this 'new' course, and particularly information as to whether I can just finish off my 'old' one once we get the boat back out of hiding, or if I *have* to do the new one, or if I decide it would be worthwhile doing the new one anyway. Therefore some kind of information would be very useful, and it seems odd that seemingly none is being made publicly available.

At present, they do if they are going to use VHF in the boat.
However, we are looking at putting our own BSAC course together and getting MCA approval and the radio licence approval
It will come in time

Just complete your boat-handling course. No need to worry about the new one.
In essence all that has changed is we have removed the Chart work part form boat handing.

That cannot happen too quickly. Do we have any timescales or is it just wishful thinking at the moment.
It it a prerequisite for taking the club boat out (obviously) within our club but puts people off due to the cost.
