Is Lifesaver still a real SDC or is it simply an anachronism left over from previous training programmes?

The reason I ask is that the new AD syllabus is considered to cover the Advanced Lifesaver syllabus...but I cannot find anything that states what DTP grade is considered to cover Lifesaver.

It seems that the material in the syllabus is covered and assessed in SD and PRM, further tested during DPM and again at AD.

Yet those of us holding the old AD appear not to be able to progress to Advanced Lifesaver without doing the Lifesaver course...yet those of us who are AD/OWI can TEACH the relevant material to new AD students!

Can someone explain this anomaly to me?

Thanks,

Iain

Good question, I would like a clarification for that one as well.

A good point Iain, and one that has a parallel in the Dive Leader syllabus...

An OWI can teach and assess to the limit of his Diving Qualification therefore, is it true to say that an AD+OWI can teach subjects such as O2 administration on a Dive Leader course but NOT on an O2 Administration SDC?

I await an answer with bated breath (unless I'm diving of course!!!)

Hi John,

We discussed this a little while ago here
<a href="http://www.bsacforum.co.uk/forums/instforum/posts/3637.html" >http://www.bsacforum.co.uk/forums/instforum/posts/3637.html</a>

I ended up email HQ to see the exact requirements, and you can teach O2 admin on either as part of DL or as an O2 admin course. Approval from HQ is not required.

My full post (in the same thread) is here:

If you haven't been taught a skill, how can you teach it.

I am a pre-1995 AD, but still attended an Advanced Lifesaver just to bring my instructor skills up-to-date.

None of the Instructor Manual, Lifesaver SDC and Advanced Lifesaver SDCs require the instructor to hold Lifesaver/Advanced Lifesaver qualifications. To assess the SDCs, one has to be an approved Examiner, but this is not true of the new AD course.

On a personal level, I would have no concerns about teaching the material. The skills and knowledge on which the Lifesaver and AdvLS courses (and the new DTP) appear to be based are taught within the previous DTP and PRM and FAD SDCs. As an OWI as well as a PRM Instructor and FAD Instructor (lapsed), Iam confident that I know the material pretty well and do not worry about my competence to teach it...just as I can teach it on the relevant SDCs. I don't know many OWIs with similar qualifications, but the new DTP allows them to teach the equivalent of LS/ALS without such.

I do find it bizzare that Lifesaver/Advanced Lifesaver SDCs require approved examiners (who may not have taught the course) while the equivalent DTP training, core resuscitation training and oxygen administration training is done with no formal quality control whatsoever.

I'd quite like to be ALLOWED to attend Advanced Lifesaver, but cannot, as I don't hold Lifesaver. We've been kicking around the idea of putting together an in-house Lifesaver course for a few years, but haven't got the pool time spare to do it.
(And yes, I am aware that there is a Regional course in January...which I can't attend...and two in February, which I don't yet know if I can attend. Two of these three are in Wales, which isn't the most accessible place from East Anglia!)

Janos,
This has cleared up quite a lot of my thoughts on what I can and can't teach!

Thanks
