Ok for all you vyper users out there :)

My trusty old Aladin Pro needed an expensive battery replacement, so i decided to bite the bullet and purchase a new comp.....i got a good deal and so finished up with a Vyper.

Just got back from Sharm where i did a few dives with both computers to get comfy with the thing,,,,,

Now....after looking at the manual and pressing loads of buttons ive come up with a cpl of points....

1. The vyper wont let you plan a deco dive...the dive plan ooption stops at 40 mtrs i think and 5 mins no stop time and wont go any lower....

2. in the dive simulator mode....when you take the beast on a "dry dive" you can take it down all the way and for a long time and go into deco no problem...and it tells you to come up and stop at certain depths etc ...BUT

My old pro in dive plan mode would not only let you plan a deco dive, but when you "ran" the numbers the pro would give you a reading of how long it would take you to get all the way out, from your currant depth, through all your stops and out......

The vyper doesnt do this....

Am i missing something or is the vyper not as good as the pro in these respects ?

welcome your comments....

I don't think the vyper is that sophisticated in planning mode. Whilst it DOES deco happily and I've never had any problems doing deco diving with it. I don't really use it for planning. I use it to get an idea of the no stop time given my surface interval but not to do complex planning.

Hi Kath

so what do you use to plan deco dives ?

cheers

On mmy Vytec (don't know about the Vyper, but I imagine it's similar) you can see the no stop times for depths, or you can "SimDive" and use the up and down buttons to go deeper or shallower (in 3m increments). Dive-time ticks over and you can see what your decompression obligation will be for a particular dive.

That said, I use JDeco on my phone; or even 88s, to give me a worst case plan if my computer breaks. IMHO there's nothing wrong with planning aggressive deco if your computer breaks and then padding the 6m stop if you've got plenty of gas.

Yes, I tend to take a look at the 88's before going in. Majoritivley my diving so far has been less than 35m and with no stop or only a couple of minutes stops on each dive.

Altho I'm now starting to progress onto longer/deeper diving so I'm looking at getting a copy of V Planner or something similar and planning a slate for each dive.

Vyper planning isn't great. As said you can see no stop times for certain depths (3m increments) pre-dive or you can use the simdive thing which is fiddly and time consuming but would work.

Officially, the disclaimer is "do not engage in mandatory "decompression diving" as with most computers (arse covering as most agencies dont allow it) which is probably the reason for that.

However it does do deco happily albeit it punishes deep stops and so on. Other than the very expensive end of the market most computers aren't wonderful for planned deco diving. Saner than using the 88s unpadded though.
