Hello,

I was having a conversation the other day about unexpected things you learn, or learn to do, by doing different activities. You don't want to know about the conversation itself but my offering was:

Before learning to dive I could not spit! It caused great hilarity to everyone at the dive club and the only reason that I could eventually bring myself to learn to do it was the threat of others volunteering their spit for my mask!

best wishes,

Maria

Hehehehe

I think we do....

me and an old uni pal had a theory about side effect skills from diving. Despite some research, I remain unconvinced, and will continue the research.

I had to sleep with a light on and was a bit claustrophobic, this went away when I realised it was an irrational fear compared to wreck penetration diving.

I also have a far better understanding of the weather (useful for flying !)

I never expected to learn to drive boats (and teach boat handling)

I didn't even know I had a valve in my head that, like a gas switch, could connect my lungs to mouth, nose, both or neither but now I can conciously control it.

Before I started diving I considered Dalton's Law, and the gas laws, to be some of those pointless bits of knowledge included in education for no practical reason. Now I understand that the real purpose of my schooling was to prepare me for diving ;)

Now I happily plan my life around so many laws, keeping Murphy's Law high on the list as the most important law in diving.

I once learned that I could blow bubbles from my right ear. :(

Not sure that's a benefit though.

Home made sign language!! I learned that I can actually be quite resourceful when it comes to communicating with people!

Believe me.. We would be fascinated to hear... Unless it contravenes the AUP. But even if it does - post it anyway, so we can scramble to read before the mods get to it.

OK - just to enforce that you really don't want to know!!!!

It involved someone learning something very interesting to them about menstrual cycles whilst, and due to going on, an underwater baby photo shoot.

SEE!!!! I told you that you didn't want to know...

best wishes,

Maria

I know that cervical mucus changes its viscosity during the entire menstrual cycle, but don't know if this affects spit???

I seem to remember both Jack and Rose were spitting before they sank the Titanic, and she, like you, also had trouble with spitting, but survived the dive, whereas Jack didn't. I presume you have found similar advantages - do tell!

Since getting a pee valve I've become quite adept at wringing my own pish from my socks.

Hi Nigel,

My avatar is one of me and my littlest (who is now 3). There are lots of old ones on my website - www.merbabies.co.uk on photoshoot link then -merbabies gallery.

I can't post most of the ones because they are of other peoples children (unless I have permission) but I might email you a couple of our recent ones if you are interested

best wishes,

maria
