Hello,
locking for advise from people which have taken the TIE & PIE, i am not concerned about the theory presentation but what drives me nuts is the theory exam & partical pool teaching exam.

What is the level of the theory exam? It says that it covers information up to and including Dive Leader. Does that mean it is the same level as Dive leader or does it imply a level which would one need to teach the Dive Leader theory?

If cause i know that one should have a much higher level if one wants to instruct, but what is realy needed for the exam?

Any pdvise is highly appreciated.

Regards

Khaled

hi Khaled.

First, the theory. a 10 minute lecturette, if I remember correctly. Could be on pretty much any topic covered in ocean/sport/DL syllabus. I get 'the regulator' for mine. take a look at www.diveinstruct.org - I think there are other example topics on there.

The theory examination is a multiple choice exam covering various areas. It can be anything considered to be up to Dive leader level. Have a good read of all the BSAC books - the diving manual, dive leading, safety and rescue for divers and also seamanship for divers. Get copies of the OCean/Sport/DL exam papers (3 for each grade) from your branch, and make sure you know the answers to them all.

The practical is, unfortunately, not a pool based exam. it is an open water based session. there are only a certain number of diving skills you can be asked to teach. go through all the skills in in teh oc/sp/dl syllabus, and pre-prepare lesson slates for each of the skills - use a waterbook type thing for doing it. That way, you arrive at your exam, and you lesson plan is ready to go, no matter what they give you.

I would suggest also, that on each page, along side you lesson plan, you write out the essential criteria. Just as a promt/aid memoir.

good luck.
