I had been planning to go to Wraysbury Friday-next (after hearing such great reports about the loos:D ), but a chap at the club has announced that it is a silt bottom and vis can be as bad as at Gildy.....

Is this the case?

best wishes,

Maria

...but the big thing that makes it bad is when it's busy at the weekends, and even then it depends where you are in the lake. Everything gets kicked up around the platforms with all the schools and training going on.

It's far better during the week when everything has had some time to settle (There's no current stirring things up), so Friday is probably a good day to try. It also gets clearer as things get colder later into the year.

I've never seen 20m vis, but you'll quite often get over 5m. Around the platforms at the weekend it can be 0.5m, and that's what a lot of people form their opinion on.

No matter where you go, there will be divers digging trenches through the silt. And for some reason they dont like to be told to come off it. (up)

Get there very early or go on a day where there are little or no other divers.

If you want 20m viz then try Capernwray mid week and early.

Last winter I often went to Wraysbury on a Friday. The viz was generally around the 8m mark.

However the bottom was very silty, so after we'd done a few mask off drills the viz was much reduced.

Go on a Friday, stay off the bottom, and you'll be fine.

If they don't paint the place for 15 years, then it'll be as bad as Gildy. At least the loos have been improved. Last time I went to Gildy (a year ago) the container changing rooms were as grim as ever.

Since the closure of Horsesa, Wraysbury is alot busier and that doesn't help with the viz unless you swim over the back, although Gildy has the advantage of depth.

If you want some where close to London, Wraysbury is ok.

The staff at wraysbury do encourage divers to retain max vis (by keeping off the bottom so only doing drills on one of the many platforms!!) and AFAIK on Fridays you are only allowed to dive one end of the lake, to let the silt settle before the weekend onslaught .

Yes, vis at Stoney is better (on average) but I choose Wrays if I don't need depth because the staff are so friendly & it's a nice relaxing day - can park near the water, lots of picnic tables etc.

Have fun! Lindsey
