Advanced Diver

Hello,
I am about to complet my Advanced Diver and as I am a Padi DM coming in from the cold have no idea what are some of the detials i will face in the following course parts.
1. Diving and Rescue Skill Review
2. Rescue Skills & Management Review

Could someone let me know what I can expect, i do not want to ask my instructor as he will just say: "Don't Worry - Be happy" or any similar remark.

Hi Khaled,

First off, welcome to the BSAC. My wife is in the same position as yourself being a PADI Instructor and is at some point loking to complete her Advanced Diver so I can understand completely where you are coming from.

To sumarise the content of these lessons:

Diving and Rescue Skills Review
Mask clearing at 20m
Alternate Air Source Ascent as donor and receiver (20m)
Demonstrate correct weighting
Jettison casualtys/own weightbelt
Rope throw rescue
Surface buoancy rescue - swim to casualty in mask fins snorkel and safely tow casualty to boat

Rescue Skills and Management Review
Controlled Buoyant Lift from 20m (stop lift at 6m and make normal ascent)
Secure casualty at surface
50m Tow with AV (or tow & blow as it is sometime referred to ;o)
Rescue Management scenario - student takes the role of Rescue Manager to manage the above scenario directing other divers to carry out necessary actions. You should have use of an O2 kit and manikin for this.

Your Instructor should brief you thoroughly before each lesson but this gives some indication of what is required. If it has been a while since you did these skills last or if you have not had the opportunity to perform the 'BSAC way' of doing a controlled buoyant lift before which may be different from the way you were taught with PADI you should ask your Instructor to go through these things with you. Another option would be to book onto a BSAC Lifesaver course where you will be taught many of these rescue skills and also possibly consider an O2 Admin and/or Practical Rescue Management Course for revision (even though you may have a crossover for these). Rescue Skills cannot be practiced often enough.

Dave,

Firstly, to correct a mistake, Mr. Khaled Al-Wassia crossed over to BSAC as a PADI Divemaster and not a PADI Instructor, and was duly provided with the SALT equivalent of BSAC Dive Leader. He is currently under BSAC Advanced Diver training.

Maybe Mr. Al-Wassia should have read the information he required from the the BSAC Instructor Manual that his Branch D.O. kindly loaned him to study for his TIE/OWIC/PIE.

One thing is for SURE the next time he asks for ANY form of assistance, the answer will probably be something along the lines of: 'Don't Worry, be Happy!' or of course a 'Similar Remark'
