You have two choices.

1.

(a) Attend the BSAC 1 day Open Water Instructors Course where you will be shown practical ways to conduct Open Water Lessons.

(b) Log 12 Hours of Practical Instruction - Then send proof of your 12 Hours to BSAC HQ you will then be awarded BSAC Open Water Instructor.

or

2.

(a) Attend the BSAC 1 day Open Water Instructors Course where you will be shown practical ways to conduct Open Water Lessons.

(b) Attend the 1 day BSAC Practical Instruction Examination. where you will be given an in water lesson to teach (Proparbly one of the ones that you prqactised on the OWIC!!) If you are succesful then you will be awarded the qualification.

Option 2 is possibly the quickest as you could take the PIE exam as soon as you have attended the OWIC

But Option 1 is better if you feel you dont want the pressure of taking an exam.

I may be way off here but isn't club instructor a valid NQI grade regardless of what new NQI's become available.

Why should he/she become a new instructor?

Just a thought

As far as I understand it, a Club instructor can teach anything on their own, for example go off and teach someone Ocean Diver, but they can't for example supervise Assistant Instructors teaching anything, and can't lead a large training session.
Thats what was explained to me by a club instructor who recently joined our branch anyway... we haven't got as far as them doing any teaching so haven't really looked up the exact rules yet.

See the on-line Branch Officers handbook, *4.2.5. Who can Teach - and What*.

Here is the extract:
"Club Instructor is a pre 2002 Nationally Qualified Instructor qualification, because no open water assessment was required, they are not permitted to supervise either Assistant Diving Instructors or Practical Instructors at open water locations. However, they are permitted to teach open water lessons (to their diver grade) without the need for another Nationally Qualified Instructor to be present."

I would say that option 1 is the best way. as a CI, the person can already teach , just need to log the next 10 hours worth in order to get the OWI. I see no benefit for going for the extra cost/pressure of sitting the PIE. YMMV
