Are any clubs out there considering the teaching of basic manual handling skills in their training i.e lifting cylinders, lifting casualties out of the water etc.

I have started considering the effects of badly managed manual
handling/lifting that can creep into diver instruction & try to
minimise where possible. Two examples so far:
Encouage buddies to help each other with BCD/tank on/off assistance. When removing a casualty from water/ onto dry land
etc. Always consider who you can get to help ! casualties come in all shapes and sizes - a resscuer sustaining a lifting injury duing training is a real possibility & should be minimised by the instructor.

I am not an expert in occupational health & safety, but my employer put me on a manual hanling course last year which
got me thinking...

My branch organised an evening session some time ago when one of our members who is a physiotherapist gave a short talk and then watched people doing various typical tasks (lifting cylinders, fuel tanks, etc.) and offered advise on improving the techniques used. It was very well received by those who attended.

As those who have attended any of the BSAC Instructor Training Events will know, one of the mantras is to take every teaching opportunity. You don't have to be an instructor to teach and there doesn't have to be a course or a certificate at the end of a 'lesson'.
