What is the IFC course about and why become an Instructor ?
Could any body give me some information as to what and why it is they become instructors.
I feel HSE involment in recent diving incidents may make future prospective instructors think again about instructing new divers

IFC course teaches you how to teach, it assumes you already know the skills that you be required to teach. It is really good fun.

I started teaching to put something back into my branch. I still do it because nothing beats the first time you take someone into open water and show them big schools of fish following you

HSE has nothing to do with us. HSE are (from thier website" "responsible for the regulation of almost all the risks to health and safety arising from work activity in Britain." Its not work so its not covered. It would require a fairly major change in the law for them to get to a position where they had any juristiction over us.
Having said that it is only prudent that we keep an eye on what they say so that we can follow best practise at all times, to do that we need to monitor others so we can make an informed judgement as to what is best practise

As already mentioned, the IFC teaches you how to pass your skills on to other new divers. It includes things like how to keep your students safe, certain things to look for / be careful about, lots of other bits I can't think of, and it also helps just working with lots of divers from different clubs and the instructor trainers to find out about different ways of doing things, can be very interesting, is an enjoyable course, and well worth doing.

I'm at a Uni club, students taught me, I want to go back to help next year's lot, and I think being an instructor will help anyone to keep in practice with skills they may otherwise forget about - when else would you spend time in a quarry in the middle of winter doing mask clearing and rescue skills? If you're going to do it to keep your own skills in practice, why not teach someone else at the same time? Thats the way BSAC works, someone gave their time to help you, it'd be nice for divers to give that back in future years.

Forget HSE - you're safe from them! :O)
Well, maybe not forget them, they do say some useful things, but don't worry about them coming after you anyway...

The IFC is well worth doing even if you dont intend becoming an instuctor, it makes you think about your diving in a logical progression and highlights areas you may need to work on. In short, it helps you become a better diver by making you ask what you are doing, why you are doing it and how you are doing it. Reasons for becoming an instructor.................
As for HSE, I think laugh or ignore at your peril would be the order of the day. If your an instructor and it all goes to pooh, dont be surprised to find them looking over your shoulder.

What is the IFC course about
Teaches you how to teach using modern methods, it's very well thought out and compares extremely favourably with "professional" "How to teach" courses I've been on

To give something back, and (by default) to keep me thinking about and honing skills and theory. Plus it can be a lot of fun (in a bizare kind of way)if you get a kick from helping people to enjoy what you enjoy

Not a problem for us as BSAC isn't "work" because we don't receive remuneration

Doesnt really matter if we are BSAC or not, IMO if you feel
that you wouldnt measure up against a cursory HSE look then you
need to rethink your dive planning.
How many have done there risk asessments yet?
Dont need to do them?
You'll be based in Lyme Regis then.
