Probably best not to post mulitple threads on the same subject as some of us get confused :)
But have you bent it :D

So the guy asks for help and he gets 2 posts telling him to Bo**ox
becauce he dared to post twice and one on the wrong part of
the forum.
The lad should be whipped to within an inch of his life to teach
him a lesson.
Why are you more bothered about how the site is run rather than
the lads initial inquiry. Realy sells the BSAC does'nt it.

end post....
Its hard to say with out knowing its history, but try washing it in fresh
water and drying it. Leave it a few hours and see what it does.

First off, I have never owned or used an Aladin, so some of this is supasition.
If you haven't dived for a long time I would expect that it was powered down when you took it out of its box?
To turn on the computer you would have had to wet the contacts.
When the computer powered up they usually do a battery check, what was the battery condition?
I suspect strongly that the problem is that the battery is flat (or almost flat), as such it, probably went straight to ERR when you powered up.
I think that you will either need to change the battery (usually this requires returning it to UWATEC), which I don't believe is possible because this is now a discontinued line, you 'may' be able to change the battery yourself, but this is not straight forward.
If you dive infrequently then your best approach may be to hire a computer, either from your LDS (if they offer such a service) or from the dive centre (if you are going on holiday).
The truth is a replacement for the Aladin Sport (i.e. a no frills computer) is very cheap the Sunto Gekko is well regarded, you should be able to pick one up for less than £160.
I am unsure what is available from Uwatec.
There are other cheap alternatives available. [1]

[1] One significant advantage with the Suunto's (& Aladin's), is that they are very common & popular & normally there are others who can explain there operation & functions. This is often not the case with the less popular manufactureres

I do not know anything Aladin computers so can not help with that enquiry, regarding your other points:
Do you think that posting to the "Forum Help" section is likely to elicit useful responses from those that only browse one or two forums?
Do you think posting an identical question twice is likely to improve or decrease the quality of the discussion?
How about three threads? Four? Five? I think my record for clear ups is eight threads.
We try to discourage multiple duplicate threads because these water down the discussion which leads to poorer quality advice, with multiple threads not everyone will necessarily see all the responses so you get poorer build up of information and perhaps more importantly poor advice will not necessarily be picked up by other posters and corrected.
You may not agree with me that this is the best approach and I would respect that opinion, however what I think is unarguable is that the original poster is no worse off and the forums tidier for my clean-up.

Oh please
I would agree with Gareth, it probably needs a new battery. It hasn't happened to any of my Aladdins though although one did get bent :)
Oh and for the record I didn't tell him to "Bo**ox" as you put it, I pointed out the way that forums work best.

Come on folks, help the guy out :) Whenever the battery on an Aladin drops to 60% you are heading for 'Err' territory. If it was fine when you last used it, you haven't used it for a while, switched it on and it shows 'Err' - then it needs a new battery, it's that simple :D

Let it get wet, in the sink, and if it persists then safely assume its battery is too low to do more than display "Error" on screen.

That is my experience with Aladin computers. Time for a new battery or new computer.

Yes and I have my standards like spelling and a tidy forum :D
New battery required I think. Aladdin's run out of life at about 60% if I remember correctly.
