The post count number is always wrong when I look (e.g. at the moment it tells me I have 4 new posts, but when I look I am told I have none.

Can we delete this bit for the moment until it works properly? I'm talking about the line on the home page in my User CP box just below my avatar and above the logout link. I'm not talking about the "New posts" button in the navbar.

Cheers,
Tristan

With lots of forums and the current levels of traffic hunting out todays post could get tedious without it.

I'd say leave it in. Hunting around I think I can find the right number of posts in unlisted threads. It is the thread list that is wrong.

Nigel,

The "New Posts" button will still be at the top of the page on the main navbar.

I've just got a bee in my bonnet about the home page where it always, tells me that I've got new post, but when I look there aren't any  . As it doesn't seem to help, only mislead I think we should remove it until it does work.

Cheers,
Tristan

OK. I think I understand now. Can the display it sends you to be changed to show the new posts rather than the threads that contain the new posts?

I think it's to do with the way that new posts for a user are calculated by the back end database. vB doesn't do it instantly, it does it every now and then (for each user) due to the potential processing load. So what you're seeing on the 'Home' page is a cached count from several minutes ago.

However - because of the way we've got the auto-marking of read threads running on 'New Posts' whenever you go to 'New Posts' at that point the database recalculates an up-to-the-second list. So what you're seeing is the home page saying "you did have new posts" (because it's a cached value) but when you go to 'New Posts' it's recalculated and that bit of the system is saying "ah, but you don't have at this second".

In other words - it's broke. Personal view? Turn the damn thing off, it adds nothing, it's wrong.

Hmmmm... I don't use it that way.
I went to 'Quick actions' and selected
'Mark Forums Read'
This started me off with a clean sheet of all posts having been read, then when I visit the forums next time, I just select New Posts' from the navbar and it just shows all new post threads since I last visited.
It has worked perfectly since I started using it.
In fact, I've been a bit disappointed that lately there have been no new posts to look at.... sound familiar?
:D
