View Full Version : Practical Instructor
Am I correct in thinking that for someone to be a "Practical Instructor" and thus able to teach the practical side in open water un monitored by a NQI. They need to have done both the Practical Instructor exam and to have sat the Theory knowledge paper?
Two of our club have done the PIE and have been told they have passed it, they then assumed that they could teach!

My understanding (and this is from memory) is a "Practical Instructor" would be issued with a number from HQ. The number tells the Branch Diving Officer that the required teaching standard had been assessed and any lesson/skills signed off are valid.
In addition a "Practical Instructor" does not require the supervision of an NQI when teaching OD or SD lessons.
As I said this is from memory.

My lawyer sister insists "Never assume, it makes an ASS of U and ME". It is a good maxim for general use. In this case, until both Practical Teaching exam and Theory Knowledge exam are complete, there is no NQI number. The chart says it all, no number = no independence, you and Edward are right.

But surely they can teach under supervision????
Isn't this taking bureaucracy to the extreme and detrimental to any keen diver aiming to be an instructor? See previous thread about waiting 5 months to sit a theory paper before being 'allowed' to teach in open water?
Surely, if you have people willing to teach they would be happy to do so under supervision to start with? Why put them off with such a lead booted approach?
Just my ramblings

Anke,
I give up! You've selectively misquoted me, omitting the context.
We were talking about the need for both Practical Instruction and Theory Knowledge exams to be passed in order to get a PI number and so to teach without supervision.

Mike,
apologies, I misread the original post to start with, never mind selectively misquoting you. Sorry! Shall ensure I read posts more carefully in future.
