Not in authority, but.............suggest you check what your branch constitution says. Most allow reasonable reimbursements of branch expenses.

I've never claimed from my branch for any expenses, but trainees have often driven me to site (in fact we try to arrange it that way). I never ask them to pay for anything, but they will normally volunteer to stand you air fills and breakfast.

And on top of that - legally (i.e. for tax and HSE) you are not instructing professionally if you are only recovering your costs and make no profit. Be careful on this one, as even a small profit takes you into a whole new ball game

True, but also remember you can claim up to about 45p per mile for driving which tends to be more than most people will claim and diving can involve a fair bit of driving

Think it is now 40p per mile, but the number of miles per year has increased.

Ahh yes, I see it has dropped to 40 ppm for the 1st 10000 miles per annum. As far as expenses go, I normally would have to travel a min of 80 miles roundtrip to teach in OW, which would allow ?32 to be claimed just for mileage so I don't have to worry much about making a profit in IR terms ( given that I would only tend to charge for fuel ).

It used to be 45p for the first 4k then 25p for any other mileage for cars between 1501 and 2000 cc's with different rates for small and larger engines.

For cars its now 40p for the first 10k then 25p with no allowance for engine size.

Don't forget if you claim mileage as part of your employment it goes towards these mileage limits.

For cars its now 40p for the first 10k then 25p with no allowance for engine size.

If you are claiming petrol / travel expenses , then declaring it for mileage against TAX purposes, you are in affect WORKING.

Employed as a DIVER, claiming PETROL expenses, claiming TAX = illegal if not a HSE diver.

Even if your trainee buys you a bacon sarnie, you are breaking the law, because you have TAKEN A REWARD FOR THE SERVICES YOU ARE GIVING.

Andy.

I agree if claims are being set against Tax, but not if it is just recovering additional expenses.

yeah thanks guys...

i was only thinking of air fills/entry to stoney, and a breakfast or few beers....not actual money to make any proffit
its just some people within our branch think as instructors we are entitled to nothing in the way of expenses.

Hi Mark,

Expenses can be claimed. See http://www.bsac.org/techserv/tecpubaexp.htm for guidelines for reimbursment of expenses

Cheers.........Allan

Not true. It would have to be a pretty special bacon sarnie to be worth more than expenses incurred through instructing!
