I am on the verge of buying a new reg set and am undecided between Mares Proton Metal or Apex XTX 50/40 package.
Disregarding purchase price, does anyone have experience of these regs in way of performance/servicing costs etc?

I have dived with both and much prefer the Apeks.
The Proton belonged to SWMBO. She bought it cos it was pretty !! Sold it shortly after.

What diving are going to do with them?
Temp, depth, type?
SDS are doing their £125 ATX40/DS4 deal again. Buy 2 and sell the spare first stage to me for £40.

Of course there is a tale going about that Apeks are now only supplying Nitrox regs with M26 DIN.
I hope it's not true.

The Apex should be a good investment long term when it comes to servicing costs, and from what others say about performance etc, sounds a good bet.

Okay, well I'll buck the trend of Apeks's internet fan base in the interests of balance.
I've got proton metals and think that they're great, nice breath on them, very compact 2nd stage. I prefer them to my abyss.
When I've used apeks regs (tx 50 I think), to be honest I thought that they were cr@p.

What does your local dive shop stock and service?
Most of the time I'm unaware that I'm breathing.
I've used an ATX40 its a good reg. I've tried the proton metal I liked it. I'd think twice about the Mares because the local dive shops in my area don't stock/sell Mares regs.

Different beast to the ATX range. Lot heavier and brick like for a start.

Yup, me too. Love the Proton Metal and have used them UK and abroad.

Tuned beyond the standard service spec? If so how (or do you need IP gauges etc) ?
Ive got TX40/50 (as well as XTX) but never really fiddled with them.

Have my regs serviced, but never had a need to 'tune them'. OK I had to have the intermediate pressure addjusted on one of my ScubaPros, but that was done with the service.
The TX range are heavy. I dont think you can shy away from that.
