I have recently crossed over to BSAC, mainly to gain a military sports diving supervisor qualification (SADS). I have crossed over at the DL level and have studied the BSAC courses up to DL.

I now want to progress my advanced qualification and would like to know if there are any exemptions from parts of the new syllabus, as there were in the old. The relevant qualifications that I hold are:

IANTD Intermediate Trimix
TDI Advanced Nitrox and Deco Procedures
PADI Divemaster
RYA Level 2 Powerboat

Grateful for any help,

Lanny

Hi Lanny
I am the DO at a military club, have completed Pre-SADS and am about to go on my SADS course (tomorrow! no pressure!). To be honest I think the easiest route for you is to complete the Advanced Diver course at your branch. As the course it is now not modular the applicability of other courses isn't really relevant (IMHO). Prior experience, of which you seem to have a great deal of, is ideal for the SADS (and Pre-SADS). As for the rest of the requirements of JSP 419 for attending a SADS course, i.e being an Advanced Diver a year etc... If you talk directly to JSSADC they are very helpful, and in some cases can adjust the rules, If you want more specifics, like who to talk to etc.. drop me an email I will help all I can. I am also a BSAC AI (and PADI Dive Master, TDI Advanced Nitrox Instructor, and I have my Boy Scout home help badge!)so depending on where you are I am more than willing to help out with training, I also have the list of Military clubs, SADS lists etc... Although I forgot to mention I am Army, so if you are a fish head or a crab forget it :) (ok, maybe I'll help anyway)

As a retired Pongo who plans to board your boat this season, please take care. I may leave a Pong on board.

I was on a Seasearch coarse with your branch TO a couple of weeks ago, sounds like you have space for half of YD on your new boat?

Regards Paul.

Good luck to both of you on the SADS course, and many happy freebees on completion.

Started diving too late in my Army time to get that far but did the Skiing side instead, what a life. And they paid me?

Sounds like you have space for half of YD on your new boat?

Why not consider an exped in the far east? My website explains and has the 2003-4 course prog for JSSADC for anyone wanting to take advantage of the military system.

Ollie, my SADS assessment was in a gale force wind. Of 9 candidates only 2 passed.....& one of them did so at the 2nd attempt (and was based at Bovi).

Cheers mate.....& I still recon you're fatter than ME!!

I will have to post those scarry pic's of you by your Chamber if you keep that up. At least i don't need a coating of grease to squeeze me into work. (Dave works at a recompression chamber and is rather large to fit through the entrance).

Just been chating to Jonah, who to visit first? You in Thailand or him in Belize?

I hope you manage both!

The Company I work for have 12 Chambers worldwide, 1 of which is in Belize. If you were to go there I'd "do my bit" to ensure you were in good hands.......but don't wear a BLACK wetsuit-you'll get Harpooned!!

I too was supposed to be on the Sads with Mr Smith (Pongo) but the course was cancelled due to the weather in Plymouth this week (Force 7 SW).

Good news is we passed the written assesment on Sunday, so we are going back in July. (Weather permiting).

What Richie failed (apt choice of words don't you think) to mention was he is also a pongo, not only that, but a grunt as well !
But he was correct, I think the guy upstairs (and I am not talking about Elvis, as he was in Flares in Plymouth on Saturday night with the two of us) doesn't like SADS 1 as it is the second year running it has had to be cancelled. We do get a chance to go back (to Flares!) and do it all over again.

You missed H-Hour on those dates, i took 30 divers to Weymouth for the weekend 3-5 and had 7 cracking dives and my beginers loved it, so did i, i actually know what the Countess looks like now, perfect course weather i'd say.

Hi Paul
Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest. We are going back for SADS II, (the return to flares!), well most of the course are, I am going to have to go to the emerald toilet for marching season and so will have to postpone my course until SADS 3 or 4. Still, at least my club won't be without a SADS for another diving season.....or B ..

Next thread should read, "SADS needed for dive club in north yorkshire.....crabs and fish-heads need not apply"

Ahhh Marching Season, why do i not miss that, proberably 'cos my experience of them peaked in the early 80's and everything after that was a let down.

Good luck on whatever SADS course you eventually get on, and may you enjoy many freebee's in reward for your effort and determination. Lucky sod.

Hi Lanny
To answer your question.
RYA Powerboat level two = to BSAC Boat handling course. If you want a Dive Cox cert you will need to attend a Cox assesment.
Your Nitrox will cross over to BSAC Adv Nitrox. this you can do through Hq 0151 350 6200 ask to be put through to the Tec department.
As for your SADs course

The pre course requirments are
1. Advance diver for 12 months (but this can be wavered if you speakto the cheif diver as to
what you need, they will help in every way they can.
2 you need to be a boat handler.
3 you need a working knowlage of BSAC 88 tables.

Your RYA Powerboat Level 2 will help you on your SADS and being a Nitrox diver will too as most SADS Courses dive Nitrox now, however do read the BSAC Nitrox tables as they will use them to plan dives, as well as planning dives on computers. A BSAC Dive planning and Marshilling course will also assist you in your quest to become a SADS, that is as well as doing all your Advanced Divers course with your new club. You should also read Joint services diving regs, which can be foud on the RAFs web site. You will have a theory exam when you get there so I would read all the BSAC training books you can get hold of so you (if you like ) do it the BSAC way.
if you need anmy other information please contact me.
