Worldwide diver numbers/statistics

Does anyone know where to find statistics on numbers of scuba divers per country (well, the main ones anyway)? Not looking for exact figures (they probably don't exist!), ideally I'd like an indication of number of active scuba divers per country, otherwise just qualified diver numbers would be a start.

Dont think anyone knows and if they did it'd be a trade secret.

Most agencies have records of the number of divers qualified by them and where they live but this tells nothing at all about how many of those are active divers and how often they dive.

Even that i suspect would be commercially sensitive so i doubt anyone would release that.
