Hello members. I have been training with BSAC for the past 9 months and have passed all my pool skills and my exam but i still need my 4-5 dives (120mins) to be fully qualified as an Ocean Diver.

I have been trying my best to get the dives in before my holiday to kefalonia this year but due to bad weather and work commitments i still havent dived in open water yet.

Just wondering would i be able to dive during my holiday and perhaps have some dives ticked off? Also would a PADI school be able to tick off some dives or can they only be BSAC affiliated?

Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated

I've used holiday dives within my training but they were with a BSAC ins present.

I 'm not sure on the PADI ins being able to sign off - but I doubt it!

If it's just for minutes underwater, and not a taught lesson, then I would be happy to sign it. However your DO may have a different view.

The best thing to do is talk it through with him or her beforehand.

You'd need to find a bsac school (or whatever they're called this week) in Kefalonia to continue the training.

There is one i think on the island somewhere.

The Openwater dives are a series of progressive lessons, similar to what you have been experiencing in the pool (sheltered water). As such you need a BSAC instructor to sign each dive off in turn.

This can either be done through your branch or a bsac school. As such it is possible for you to complete your qualification on holiday as long as you do it through a BSAC school.

You may be able to dive under supervision on holiday with another agency. They will be unable to sign off the BSAC qualification, but any diving experience you gain at his time will be a benefit.

I'm a PADI instructor and I've had an Ocean Diver student in the same situation. His instructors sent me his training reports and he came with me for two boat trips (4 dives) under my supervision. He didn't have a log book, but I gave him one to log the time underwater. He could have done a referral, but that was not important. We had some great dives!

I think thats about it.

Training can only be provided by a BSAC Instructor.

Experience (type of dive, depth etc) can be verified by either a DL or PADI Instructor. Personally I think there has to be an audit trail here.

I am not sure about the legality of this but I am aware of the odd school providing training via another orgainisation Instructor but being signed of by the BSAC Instructor in charge of the School. At the end of the day it has to be a BSAC Instructor # in the box.

Kat,

Thanks for taking a BSAC trainee out and getting him wet, his experience with you has probably made him a diver for life (once his club gets him qualified).

But he could not have done a referral - he would not have done any of the following PADI skills which are 'standards':

Air off - Conf 2
Air off/AAS - Conf 3
CESA - Conf 3
W/belt Remove replace - conf 5
Scuba remove replace - conf 5

To take a BSAC diver with his/her confined sessons signed off, and to class that as a referral is violating standards and could get you in trouble with the pen pushers at HQ. Sorry.

Thanks for that Steve, but I would use the Accepting Referral Students From Certification Organizations Other Than PADI procedure as outlined in the PADI instructor manual. The boldface is quite clear and the scuba review progrm covers the skills you mentioned.

Are you a member of a branch or have you trained through a school.

If you are in a branch then just have a word with your DO and see what he or she says.
If they are half decent then they may let you do the dives and then counter sign them afterwards.
If you have trained in a schhool then you are at the mercy of your instructor.

.

However, following the change to 'lead instructor' who signs-off BSAC Diver Certifications, its entirely up to the individual where they go for their training.

That said, any Branch would, I believe, require someone under training to be paying the current Branch fees; and a BSAC Centre would charge whatever the going rate was.

The days of Branch DO's dictating where a member can get their training done are over.
