As on the Apeks website (http://www.apeks.co.uk/newsarticle.asp?Title=Limited%20recall%20of%20Apek s%20TX,%20ATX%20and%20XTX%202nd%20Stages)

It has come to our attention that an incorrectly assembled 2nd stage has been purchased. If you have an Apeks regulator or octopus that has never had an authorised annual service, regardless of how recently purchased, please take the regulator/octopus to your Apeks dealer to be visually inspected.

You can do this check yourself if you like, it is very easy .. This document (http://www.dirdirect.com/xtx%20diaphragm%20cover.pdf) has details.

(not sure if anyone has already posted this or if this is the best place to post it, please feel free to move it)

Cheers Ari,

Just spotted your thread and discovered my new XTX 200 is within the serial numbers specificed !!

Any suggestions from other Apeks reg users, of the best place to get my new reg in for its first years service. I live in the Lancashire area and am looking for someone who can do it well and not rip me off !

Thoughts would be appreciated ?

Either Eccy or Capernwray?

Is it just me who is astounded by this? I had to go to the Apeks site to make sure it was genuine!

So... for 18 months, over 100 batches made (looking at the serial numbers), and it's taken them that long to notice that an obvious part that is very easily visually checked has been missing out of the assembly process on occasions?

Doesn't say much for their quality control does it

Capernwray (Breathe Easy) have just done my ATX40 for £65 labour and parts. Not the cheapest (also not the most expensive by far). They are local for Lancaster and friendly. I also think they will do a 6 month adjustment for free once the regs have settled in after the service. They mentioned this the last time I had my regs serviced there but not this time (it was the end of the day and they were about to close so collection was a bit more hurried), so probably worth double checking.

Just found that both my XTX 40 Regs and Octo both come within this serial range :o

I thought it was more of a 'might have been possible missing on a few but might not'.

Having written a QA procedure manual I know how hard it is to document making things. One of the stories to 'scare children with' we were told on a QA course I suffered was the example of a medical equipment company who discovered a defect in their documentation processes that meant they couldn't retrospectively prove all of one item were QA passed. The fact that they had all passed didn't matter, they couldn't attach an individual pass to an individual item.

So they were all recalled, and because that added unaccountable 'at customer' handling they were all scrapped and replaced. I hope the story was apocryphal as if they happened to me I'd probably have to kill somebody.

The story I have heard is that one person said that this part was missing from a reg he had bought. It might have been removed by the dealer for some reason (they come in different colours, so may have swapped out but not swapped in, if you see what I mean), or the guy dismantled his reg and lost the bit. Lied to get a replacement. Of course Apeks had only one course of action when confronted with this.

Well, what actually happend was this.

A Girl bought an Apeks reg at the dive show, and then promptly took the reg off to the Red Sea. She took it on the first dive, and it worked absolutely fine. It was not until the second dive where everything went wrong. The dive guide on the boat had a look - and noted the missing part. substituting a part from a 'spare' apeks reg resulted in perfect working order.

Apeks are blaming 'human error'.

She had not dissassembled the reg prior to the problem.

Said young lady phoned Apeks on return, and Apeks were rather concerned that as the problem was not immediately obvious, there could potentially be many regs out there with an assembly error, so have done a mass recall. It's not exactly difficult - you take it back to the dealer and they check, or you check yourself if you feel able.

Anyway - that's what happened. I was on the liveaboard when the incident happened.
