Here's a draft letter submitted to BSAC/DIVE for publication..........
Letter for Publication
The Safety of Divers on the Samui Archapeligo was greatly enhanced in 2003 by the introduction of a Emergency Evacuation Service, the brainchild of Mr Lee Griffiths of the Hyperbaric Services of Thailand Co Ltd (Part of the SSS network www.sssnetwork.com). Evacuations by Air or Sea are now a reality, thanks to the help of the Surratthani Police, The Royal Thai Police (Each with Helicopter support) and Petcharat Marina. This service is not restricted to Divers. In the last 12 months evacuations have taken place from Koh Tao/ Koh Phangan (see map) & have included victims of road traffic accidents, tropical illness & a ruptured appendix.
The Divers Alert Network SE Asia Pacific (DANSEAP) noted a dramatic change for the better in their statistics and Mr John Lippmann (CEO DANSEAP) presented safety awards to each organisation during a civic reception on 12 December 2003 at Central Samui Beach Resort in Chaweng. John Emphasized the importance of a close relationship between divers and the Thai Police and thanked the Police chiefs for their contributions to Safety in the region. (see photo)
Samui (& Thailand) are right to be proud that their Police are involved in activities of this nature and I thank them for their excellent work.
