Has anyone got any ideas/preferences about downloading to a particular laptop/PDA etc?

I had a look for a PDA to try to download dive logs to but came up with little in the way of a PDA with USB ports so I have ordered a Asus 701 (very small laptop with solid state HDD).

I wanted something descreet and tough to have amongst my dive gear.....

The Asus comes with Linux installed so does anyone have any thoughts about using Dive Manager (or similar) with this or should I just strip XP down and load that up instead?

There's this:
http://octopuslog.sourceforge.net/

First version released a little over 2 years ago. Latest revision came out about 6 months ago.

Can't recommend it as I haven't tried it. But looks worth a look.

That can import Suunto DM files but not download from the computer itself. You may have more success with JDiveLog:

http://www.jdivelog.org/

I haven't made it read my trusty old Uwatec Memomouse + Aladin Pro yet, but it seems the Suunto import probably works without issue.

Give it a whirl when your Eee turns up. I'm jealous, BTW ;-)

They run under Java so either Linux or windows.:)

Anyone any idea how to export ALL dives from Suunto Dm 2.6 ?

You would be better waiting for their 900 (http://eeepc.asus.com/global/900.htm) model. Don’t bother with windows on it that would spoil the point and be a real pain to get working (in my opinion). You might try running the DM through a program called WINE (http://www.winehq.org/) which allows most windows programs to run in Linux. I also saw a post "new (free) Mac Suunto dive app (http://www.bsacforum.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=11834)" which may be of help ..

Hope that helps.

"Thank you for contacting Suunto."

"You can only export one dive at a time"

Not too clever ! I may still stick with ver 1.6 as that can be imported into octopus log and keeps the whole log as one SDM file.

I had a quick go at installing DM 2.6 under Wine on Kubuntu 8.10. No joy at all. The installer barfed before doing anything useful. I'll try and find the root cause of this, but I'm not all that hopeful. Also, Wine has a mixed track record when it comes to hardware integration.

However, its a access database (albeit a terribly badly designed one) so you can just load it into there and write a query to export it.

Database password is "koira" (finnish word for dog).

I've got it working perfectly with my Suunto Vyper. It's a good bit of software, too - Better than DM in my opinion. Also, being open source, you can have a fiddle if there's a feature you'd like to see added.
I've downloaded the code and got it seems pretty well structured.

If we had the schema it might look more logical.

I cannot get it to import my DM 2.x file
Also it has lost the import from 1.6 in the new version.

I have 262 dives in SDM 1.6 and the file is getting fairly large.

Older versions are still available for download, which may help. Have you tried contacting the developers. They're often a very helpful bunch on these Open Source projects. Try the JDivelog forums (http://sourceforge.net/forum/?group_id=134952). They don't look very busy, but lots of questions do get answered.
Finally, if you know a bit of Java you could have a tinker yourself...

I am not a fan of WINE at all. You would be better off running a virtual machine with vmware and sticking windows on that.

I've managed to get JDive running fine on my Acer Aspire One running linux but I've had no luck whatsoever getting it to recognise the USB / Serial cable. Any ideas?
