I have just started diving and will be part way to sports diver by the time I go to Oz next year. Any recommendations of outfits which operate out of Cairns for my level of diving or assisted diving/snorkelling for my non-diving wife and kids? Any sites you would suggest?

Hi,
I did my first ever try dive in Cairns. The Corals were quite amazing, but i admit i found more interest in looking at the bottom of the dive boat. Obviously a born wreck diver!
We were back packing at the time, and arranged a try dive from a shop somewhere along the harbour. Sorry but i can't remember the name. The boat that took us out was well equiped, and took both divers, and snorkelers. I guess that many of the operations out there are similar, and would be suitable for snorkeling kids etc.
The dive Marshal also gave an informative brief about not standing on the corals etc.
Have you had a look at the BSAC schools listing to see if a BSAC school is out there, as it may be good to get into direct contact with them, and see what they provide.
cheers,
Roger
p.s. I recomend the white water rafting on the Tully River but it may depend on how old your children are.

They will pretty much all cater for that level of diving on the day trips. I went for a pootle at the weekend with Tusa Dive which will cater for you quite nicely. They will take you to a suitable site and also offer "Discover Scuba Diving" at AUD40 for those non-divers who would like to try it out as well as snorkelling. They do a quite pleasant lunch too ( which few people wanted due to lack of seasickness tablets having been taken ... but hey, all the more for me :) )
If they would like to learn to dive, the prices to learn in Cairns are v good; currently they are offering AUD290 ( about ?120 ) for PADI OW courses .

There is no BSAC school in the area.. There is a distinct lack of BSAC presence in Australia in general
