View Full Version : Recommendations for dive holiday on own?

Any recommendations for a late summer/autumn 7-10 day solo holiday (girlfriend away, work quiet, mates can not get passes and club not doing anything)?
Am experienced (20+ years) 40 year old BSAC CI & Padi DM (male).
Have never done a live-aboard, so might be the opportunity; however, wondered if it would be lonely trapped on a boat with a load of couples! (am a social creature!).
Don't want to lose the opportunity and just work (even more!).
Any views/recommendations for a dive holiday on my own?
Cost not that much of an issue.

Hi,
Can't help for that time of year but my club is going on Blue Horizon 30/5 and I don't think there is anyone going as a couple. I know there are spaces on that.
Liveaboard is great for enforced sociability and great diving - is it worth checking with the tour operators as to whether they can give you any info whether it is a club booking or couples booking date? Might be data restricted I suppose...
I think liveaboards are always more social than anything else and I think less likely to be couples - actually I'm guessing - I've done a few liveaboards and don't recall any of them being more than 50% couples, normally less. But maybe someone else has had the opposite experience?
Perhaps you could check out some of the other local clubs to see if they have an appropriate liveaboard at the correct time.
Hope you find something good and enjoy it,
Maria
Find a late deal to the red sea, go live-aboard and enjoy a week of unadulterated diving

yes, totally agree with all of the above suggestions - liveaboard is the way to go. Many trips are not couple based and few are so couple based that you would feel in any way "out of it" or spare. The huge advantage is that you are "trapped" on board and everyone just merge's together as one big group within hours so no one is left on their own - unless they really really try hard to be!
Don't worry - ring up Tony Backhurst and see if they have any spaces on charters.

I have been diving since 1971 and still go on a liveboard trip on my own at least once a year. Never had a bad experience yet and will be looking for a short notice, discounted liveaboard in Sept/Oct this year. :D
Look at some Red Sea BSAC Travel reports at:

Specifically mine, when I have been on my own at:

Late booking seems a good idea this year - there seem to be loads of late deals being advertised compared to normal.
Tony Backhurst and Blue O Two get my vote but I'm sure whatever you go on will be great.
Be careful though, once you've done a liveaboard it's hard to go back to day boats;)
best wishes,
Maria

I have booked a solo holiday for 14 days at the beginning of September with Active Adventures, in Sharm el Sheik! Cant wait! Its not a liveaboard holiday, its a hotel holiday!

I went on an Emperor Divers liveaboard, had my own cabin and everything:D .
Seriously though, I really did have a great time.
I went on a solo liveaboard holiday in January this year. Wife was pregnant and she is not into diving altogether. It was great as I had the flexibility of diving when I wanted, and just chilling out and enjoying the experience of it all. Met some good people, too, that I keep in touch with.
I would highly recommend Tony Backhurst. They were great. I cannot fault them and all the staff/guides on the boat.
Good luck and enjoy..

Thanks for everything folks, you have convinced me and soothed my fear of being nobby-no-mates.
Not sure I want to share a cabin, so I guess it is going to cost me!

At the moment the bosts seem to have so many spaces you might not have to share a cabin anyway.
A couple of friends have just come back from a 'not full' boat and said the boat only had 5 on it for next trip!
best wishes,
Maria

You can always try Thailand in the beautiful south! Krabi is a great place to chill out and the diving is not bad either. It's still low season, so you should get some bargains. Try Manta Point Ao Nang Beach.
