Hi,
For the size of compressor you have a MDE series 45 basic filter unit would do the job. You didn't say what make of compressor you have but the series 45 can be used as a stand alone filter and coupled into the system of any make. On the outlet side of the new filter you should also have a non-return valve to stop any air getting back into the cartridge when the machine isn't running.
If you find the compressor too small in delivery and want to get a larger machine, you could consider a larger filter to start with such as the MDE series 50 unit.
I have fitted both these units to different systems for branches.
Hope this helps,
Phil
Thanks
The compressor is a coltri MCH6, I am looking at the MDE 45 with PMV.
Won't be getting a bigger compressor had a 8-11CFM monster and it's over kill for 1.5 and 3l cylinders :)
Was looking to see what other options there were really.

Hi Ian,
As the Coltri MCH6 filter doesn't have a PMV it would help if you were to fit one to the filter outlet, followed by the MDE series 45 with a simple non-return valve on the outlet side. That way the main filter cartridge will remove more contaminants rather than risk moist air getting into the carbon cartrige in the 45.
The current price of the basic series 45 filter is £237.16, a 100% carbon cartridge is £21.56 and the MDE PMV is £60.04 plus carriage and any pipe fittings you use for the job.
Regards,
Phil
PS. the MCH 8 has better filtration and a PMV fitted as standard.

Would love to have an MCH 8 but money, size and electricity supply limit me somewhat.
Not quite sure how to fit a PMV the outlet seems to be an odd thread and not 1/4 BSP. Any idea what the thread is and where to get adaptors?

Hi Ian,
Sorry for now responding, my computer went sick!
The MSH8 will run on single phase.
I will check on the thread in the filter body and let you know.

Ian.
I am intersted why you are asking for secondary filtration although you dont say is it because of using nitrox?
The thread you ask is quite common on air compressor filters, Bauer and ourselves make with this thread. Its known as a number 6 BOSS fitting and the thread is 9/16 x 18 UNF, (same as a number 6 JIC but without the 37 degree end cone) Sealing is by means of an o-ring either counter bored into a swivelling nut, allowing ease of positioning and a finger tight seal at high pressure, (nipping the thread up is sufficient) or the 0-ring is sealed in the countersink on the shell face.
Unlike a taper thread, like the BSPT taper thread mentioned in earlier post, in the MDE series 45 filter, the soft aluminium filter shell is damaged by the steel threaded fitting and damages both the soft aluminium thread and the anodising of the filter shell.
Another safety advantage of the no: 6 BOSS thread is that in the event of over pressure in the shell the o-ring will extrude at around 500 barg, safely below the burst pressure of the aluminium shell, unlike the taper thread that will remain even when the shell doesn’t. Iain.

Any idea where I can get a couple of adaptors from?
Would need both male a female JIC and male BSP.
Thanks
Nottingham Hose and Fittings are really cheap. Much cheaper than Pirtek (national company).
