I read a dive mag about how good Anglesey is for shore dives, in particular Ravenspoint. The website www.diveanglesey.co.uk was usefull but did mention some areas where SMBs are needed.

I am newly qual and have done one shore dive in Porthkerris, in March this year. Is Anglesey any good for shore dives and good for beginners?

Have a look here (http://calgopublications.co.uk/). Chris Holden has two books out. The first covering Angelsey round to South Stack. When the viz is good the diving is excellent around Angelsey. When its bad its interesting. The reason for the smb's is down to the boat traffic and mainly the jet skis.

if you want a easy dive from the shore try Trefor Pier, which is only shallow but is a lovely dive under the pier. There is lots of life downthere most times of the year and parking very close by so very little walking kitted up :)

When I had a look at Trefor Pier it was jammed full of fishermen. Didn't fancy dodging all those hooks. Were they not there when you dived it?

I've been to Trefor (not dived - was blown out) and there were no fishermen there. Otherwise, have dived (or possibly snorkelled) past the old lifeboat station at Rhoscolyn - have also done one in Rhoscolyn bay but wouldn't recommend that.

I think the pier is closed to fishermen these days? I've only dived it once, years ago, and it was good fun.

Dived Trefor Pier on Sunday at low water. The pier is now closed to all fishermen, its closed of with high security gates and locked with a chain. Two cracking dives under there, vis was 2-3 m with a slight swell.

I'm guessing the pier is going to fall down or be pulled down sometime soon?

It always looked a bit rickety and neglected.

When I dived it there were hundreds of dogfish corpses after some sort of fishing competition, very sad, so I'm glad nobody is fishing there anymore..

I've been keeping a watchful eye on this thread developing. I'm organising a anglesey camping trip for late may bank holiday. I know about ravenspoint and trefor pier, is there any other shore dives people can recommend? Cheers Jakey.

oddly my SAC just dived there on saturday.

one issue we had was the water buggering off down the beach so it took ages to A) get into the water and B) find any depth at all. i cant belive im actualy going to log a 4 meter max depth on a dive.

the gully is nice BUT we found it flows very fast and there isnt much to see in it bar a few large rocks that try to brain you in the gully propper and in the kelp beds on the other side of the large rock its very easy to get lost.

vis was around 1.5 meters around there throughout.

a few spider crabs hidden away which are nice so see and quite a few starfish
my buddie swears blind he saw a fish (what i dont know) but i didnt see anything then again the vis was poor.
