View Full Version : Volunteer Instructor Needed Barnsley
Hi I am an instructor of a youth group in Barnsley, a group of our young people are very keen to take up diving and as a result we are interested in starting a scuba dive section for them.
The problem is we do not have an instructor. We are all volunteers and receive no payment for our work we do for the group. There are opportunities to gain more qualifications, especially water sports from us.
So if you a dive leader in the Barnsley Area, with a few spare hours on your hands and would love to pass on your skills to young people, then please get in touch.
If you are doing your Duke of Edinburgh's this would count as your service section of the award. We have a child protection policy and you will need to have a CRB check.

Really, you certainly can. I'll PM you
Pirate,
Have you tried contacting the local BSAC clubs in your area? I may miss a few but there is Wombwell BSAC, Metrodome BSAC, Chapeltown BSAC.
I'm local to Barnsley myself but unfortunately am tied up with my diving club in Doncaster so can't offer you any practical assistance.
Regards,
A Dive Leader isnt necessarily an instructor.
Maybe contact Yorkshire Regional BSAC, and they might be able to organise something for you, or know an instructor (or in actual fact a couple of instructors).

Don't we have the problem here that BSAC doesn't have independent instructors? Without a branch or a school I don't think we have any substance.
I suspect it can be worked around but something here needs addressing.

Hi,
I am the regional coach for Yorkshire. It is certainly possible to look to set up a diving section within your youth group (I am helping a group in Leeds to this at the moment).
I am in the process of sending you more details in an email as you will need to register at HQ in the first instance. I also have some suggestions of how you could maybe link with a local club to sort this out.
Nigel is right, we work within the club system and so independent instructors should not work without being inside their club or school structure.
All the best
Paul
Thanks everyone.
I have been in touch with a local dive club and they are hopefully going to arrange some try dives for the kids to start with, and then we will see were it goes from there.
We are still looking at the possibility of starting our own section, as several of the adult volunteers are very interested.
Thanks everyone, I will no doubt be back with more questions.

I run a local dive school in your area.
We can offer scuba courses within the Barnsley area, for indivduals and groups.

Hi
I'm guessing that the club you mentioned is ours? Barnsley BSAC (1864). You may have also seen rcnt press coverage and be aware of our work with younger divers and those with disabilities. We are based at the metrodome leasure center in the centre of Barnsley
I'm one of the instructors at the club (we have several) and if you would like to get in touch please call the club mobile on 07783 291955. I'm sure we can be of assistance but do be aware of the neccesity for individuals to join BSAC.
As an aside, if you were interested in heading up a youth branch of our club and have the experience to do so please let us know as it is often difficult for us to retain younger divers after qualification.
Hope to hear from you
Phil
