Hi,

This is really a padi question, I know some of you are padis as well so hopefully you can help me :o

My girlfriend had an accident while doing her 2nd open water dive (28/11/06). As a consequence of this she took about a 6 month break before attempting it again.

When she tried to do this dive again (June07) it had to be aborted mid way through due to weather and a bloom of jellyfish that had got washed in.

She was still not happy back in the water and give up on it for a while.

She's recently just gone to a dive centre closer to home. They're giving her alot of pool time etc to get her confidence back again and she like to try and finish off her open water with them.

She has requested her training materials from the original dive shop be sent to the new one. This has caused a few issues with them...

They won't send the originals and will only send photocopies

They say when she redone her 2nd dive (June07) because it had to be aborted it was shorter than 20 minutes (which it was not) so it did not count as a dive.

Because of this her last dive was more than one year ago (28/11/06). So anything she has done to date is no longer valid and she will have to start her open water from new again.

So what i'm asking really is if there is a year between dives does it invalidate the entire course to date ?

Also does a dive have to be longer than 20 mins for it to be actually classed as a dive to count as credit towards the open water course.

Thanks for your help,

Mark :D

OK i'll bite :)

What do you mean by training materials? If its the books, RDP and so on each student MUST own their own copies so the dive shop should never have had those in the first place so you're entitled to them.
Or do you mean the referral form with the completed lessons signed off ? If its that a scan, photocopy, fax or email of it is fine but they have to provide something

They say when she redone her 2nd dive (June07) because it had to be aborted it was shorter than 20 minutes (which it was not) so it did not count as a dive.

There are a few things here. Firstly was the dive logged after it was finished as it should be by standards? Times and depths should be on there. Also in order to be signed off all the required skills prescribed for that dive have to have been completed regardless of time spent underwater etc so maybe that's why.

Basically with padi you have 12 months from the last training ELEMENT not necessarily the entire course. IF the last bit of that course be it the classroom, pool or open water was over 12 months ago then yes it'll need to be redone. If ANY of it was in the last 12 months then you don't need to.

So what i'm asking really is if there is a year between dives does it invalidate the entire course to date ?

See above - it might if NOTHING was done for > 12 months.

Also does a dive have to be longer than 20 mins for it to be actually classed as a dive to count as credit towards the open water course.

To be classed as a PADI training dive the average depth has to be deeper than 5m AND:
(i) Its 20 minutes or longer OR
(ii) uses at least 1400l of gas
AND all the prescribed skills for that particular dive have to be completed to that instructors satisfaction.

Hope the above helps, if you've got any queries feel free to send a PM (this is a BSAC forum after all).

(this is a BSAC forum after all).Oh I shouldn't worry aout that. The forum is facilitated and operated by BSAC members but we are also divers. Providing what you have to say is concerned with diving you are very welcome to discuss it in the open on here. Any doubts read the Acceptable Use link at the bottom of the page. Divers are welcome, it is all official and everything.

Have you thought of joining a BSAC club near you - I would hope that you would get a friendly and useful welcome. Where do you live?

Thanks for the replies everyone :)

We started our diving courses before even knowing that bsac existed. Not very well advertised over here in N.Ireland, well I don't know if it is anywhere else either !

But since the padi course was half done anyway and she's found a friendly instructor she gets on with we thought it could be just finsihed off.

I'm in Newtownards, just outside of Belfast. There is a club in Bangor and a few in Belfast i'm going to check out when I get the chance. :o

Hi Mark,

The Padi training will not be wasted as we (BSAC) accept training done with other agencies, see the pdf at http://tr100.fusionbot.com/b/trk?uid=decc438a74213931&sn=57101421&ip=87.112.74.95&lgkKy=salt&rn=1&http://www.bsac.org/uploads/documents/SALT_Feb_07.pdf

Information on BSAC Branches in the Co Down can be found at http://www.bsac.org/page/210/ireland.htm

A warm welcome to both of you to the sport.

Regards

Edward
