View Full Version : Reporting Spam

Hi All.

As many of you have realised, there is a "report spam" button at the top-right of each posting.

Could I ask you all to refrain from hitting it in the first 10 minutes or so after a spam post has been made? I frequently go through the rigmarole of cleaning up spam & banning the user, only to find a dozen emails in my inbox telling me about it...

Of course, if it goes past that ten minutes, then clearly no-one's watching at the moment, so go ahead and report it...

Thankyou.

Vic.

This would be much easier to do IF you were to put a timer showing the 'time since posting' on spam posts. In fact, while you are at it, could you please automate our emails to you telling you that there is spam being posted.

Please don't mention it.

Bryan.

I frequently go through the rigmarole of cleaning up spam & banning the user, only to find a dozen emails in my inbox telling me about it...Bryan has given me an idea to improve the much maligned reputation BSAC has for responding to it's member communications ;)

It strikes me that the moderators do not always reply to the all the spam reports people have been so kind to send. So how about we put an autoresponder on which sends an e-mail back thanking them for their assistance...from each and every moderator :D

Please don't stop sending the spam reports people, but it would be nice not to have to delete so many of them from my Hotmail box.

Each post has the time it was made displayed in the title bar. For instance Bryan's is currently showing

So when it said Today 16:43 it would be 10 minutes later, and if it were spam that would have been a good time to hit the report button but any time after would be equally good :D

Ok, good call, both. Happy to acknowledge that this thought had occurred to me but probably I failed myself several times.

"Mea maxima culpa", I shall try harder. :o

I have to be honest, if I see spam I instantly hit the spam button.
Especially, if its of a XXX nature. It is not because I am a prude, but this site has a specific objective, & is open to all, as such I don't beleive XXX material has any place here.

I will think twice before I hit the spam button & check the time of posting.

I hadn't realised that I was adding work for the moderators.

Does hitting the "report spam buttom" generate an email or message that has the same subject title for each item that is reported as spam?

If so, would it not be feasible to set up a specific email address or user name or folder to receive the spam reports thereby ensuring the 'spam warning messages' are not in amongst other messages? Sorting by subject matter should list all reports of specific posts in a block thereby making it easy to delete all in one go once the offending spam is dealt with?

No need to thank me, it's all part of my PADI RD training. :D

Everyone in a certain group gets an email Bryan, ususally admins and mods. It is not a spam message, but an 'reported post' message.

One destination is no good, as it may not be read for a while. Although I suspect for the most part at least one person is available to look at any reported post. Ususally we delete before the reports come in, but we do have to work sometime :)

why don't you turn it into an intelligent system - if a message has already been reported, then the message should be flagged as 'already reported' and the system should not bother sending a further email to the admins/mods....

Wouldn't take a genius to set that up.

I may have to log out and attend to some spreadsheets:)

You actually work...Well I can not speak for Adrian, but yes I do work. It tends to involve spending every waking hour I am not diving in front a computer screen logged into the internet. Keeping a browser open and refreshing the new posts now and again is no big deal and it tends to mean I delete spam long before I ever look at the mailbox which I have spam reports directed to.

The sort of thing Bryan and MSutcliffe suggest sounds a lot like work - hence the yawning. Yes I work with computers and they are quite tedious. In general I enjoy my job but making technology a career does not mean I am going to rush to do work for nothing any faster than any one else would.

So if you can see yourself to refraining from reporting spam for a couple minutes I would very much appreciate it.

:Yawn :YawnYou really should get some more sleep or, perhaps, some excitement in your life. I know just what you need; some exciting 'spam spotted emails'.

So if you can see yourself to refraining from reporting spam for a couple minutes I would very much appreciate it.Are you insane? Waste two minutes of my life before reporting the spam? That kind of waiting can lead to anxiety and stress and ulcers and failing bedroom performances.

Bloody selfishness I call it. Think of your public, I say.

Tsk tsk, bloody inconsiderate .............................

You guys have taken the eye of the ball, been ther longer than 10 mins...
This does not usually happen unless it si silly O'clock, as this is the first time I've seen spam not at Silly O'clck.
Will wait as you say!
But won't that just delay the 10 e-mails being sent by 11mins?
