Hello!
Can any of you give me some advice on buying my first dive torch?
I’m not too worried about how much it will cost (to a sensible point at least) as long as I get a good torch that will do it all for a long time!
Thanks again.
Like many things about diving it all depends on a number of things.
* Budget
* Type of diving (UK & Warm water)
* Type of diving (recreational or techie)
In any case a good purchase IMHO id one of these.

Very good value for money, and a good all rounder for most conditions ;)

I have a Hartenberger plus a FA&MI LED 50w. Contact any of the guys at SDS Sheffield for a good price on a host of different torches available to you - check out their website and call them for their best price.
They are offereing dive show prices during March so check em out

If you are just after something basic then a UK D4R is a good purchase. You can get one for £90 plus P&P from places like Go Dive or Deep Blue.
Worth looking at some of the LED ones as well. The price appears to be dropping on those :)
I wouldn't even look at old fashioned tungsten any more. LED is collapsing in price and is sooooooo much better.

I think that is a matter of personal taste. IMO LED doesn't perform as well under certain conditions. I have also noticed from personal experience that LED gives more of a nice glow than a focused beam of light.
My personal choice would be one of these:
