Hang on. Let's get this clear. I'm a BSAC member, and I'm off to Sharm next month. During that holiday, I

1. need recompression treatment in a chamber
2. cause a diver related injury to myself
3. am caused an injury to myself and my property when diving/on the boat etc by someone else who, it transpires, is uninsured
4. injure someone else when diving/on the boat and cause damage to their property at the same time.

Which, if any, events will be covered by any BSAC insurance I may have deriving simply by virtue of that membership, and which events, if any, would I need to have covered by separate insurance ?

Your BSAC membership includes third party cover and this has been debated at length in these fora. Such insurance does not provide cover for illness, injury and/or property loss or damage you may yourself suffer. As I understand it, you are a party to the insurance, and the company provides indemnity against claims made against you by a third party and nothing more.

If you refer to Dave Covey's comments elsewhere on this page, you may see just why substantial insurance is vital. There is an eminently suitable package negotiated by BSAC, and there are others on offer through dive mags, etc. The current BSAC deal is not the "Home & Overseas" one complained of below. Steer clear of any policy that fails to specify cover for scuba diving and scuba equipment, or you may find you've paid a great deal for not very much.

You are planning to have a bad holiday. Wouldn't you have a better time staying at home if you have all these planned.

(1) Not Covered

(2) Not Covered

(3) Not Covered. Note, very few divers will have 3rd party liability cover unless they have cover with holiday insurance. Don't expect divers to have such cover

(4) For this you could be covered

Depending on the type of diving you are planning to do, many holiday insurances cover to 30m, just make sure before taking it out. If you are planning to go deeper, then you will need to look around further. Divemaster do policies which will cover you within your certification limits. They do one which covers you *only* when snorkelling and diving, nothing else, which is quite cheap and also a full holiday insurance cover I believe.

Hey Simon,

I can deffo recommend Westfield for their Diver and Marine policy. I'm coming up for my 3rd straight year with them.

* ?128.00 for two of us (not each) for whole year cover
* multiple trip
* UK & Global
* Kit covered for damage both in transit and during use.
* Hyperbaric cover included

And no, I'm not on a retainer from them!!

You're covered 'to what ever depth you have been trained/certified to dive' (regardless of training agency/club)
health, repatriation and liability cover is very generous. HTH.

Check-out the URL below and take a gander at the cover. You can pay over the phone and get instant cover. It really was a no-brainer for us, and we looked in-depth at a whole host of policies and covers. Good luck and dive safe.

As has already been stated your standard BSAC membership insurance will only cover you for 4). It is a general 3rd party liability insurance to cover our members for claims made against them.
