Visas are ?18 if purchased in this county but on a recent trip to Hurghada I found that they were only ?11 at the airport
I know you can purchase them at Sharm so you will probably save yourself a few quid by waiting

You can purchase the visa in the arrival hall in Sharm airport for about ?11. When you arrive, you will be herded into a large hall with passport and immigration control at one end and the visa desks at the other. Your plane will almost certainly arrive at the same time as several from Moscow and Rome. These planes will be full of people who are very nice but don't understand about queuing. So, don't hesitate. Head straight for the visa desks (there is often quite a queue and a crush). ;) The visa consists of 2 stamps. You pay your money and are given the stamps which you stick onto a blank page in your passport. Then quick as you can to the other end of the big hall and get in a passport and immigration queue. The man at the head of that :) will stamp over your postage stamps and you then pass on to baggage reclaim.
Comfort yourself with the knowledge that this hullabaloo is fantastic practice for the scene that will await you at the harbour in Sharm when you are trying to get to your dive boat!!!! Smile and adopt a head down running crouch with elbows stuck widely out ready to jab.... and good luck!
All the best

Thanks Alison and Mark for your help.
I have been to Sharm before in 2000 when I was diving and remember a great confusion at the airport especially when a guy pulled our luggage away from my husband and refused to give it back until dollar bills had been passed over. We will make sure that we have small value bills for the airport and the exact money for the visas. We are actually staying at Sharks Bay which is away from Sharm but I cant find out just how far.
Thanks again,
Carol

Hi Carol
You will see a very big difference in Sharm airport - it's much bigger now and there are more cafes and shops. Quite impressive really in comparison. As you say, there are still the helpful baggage handlers though!!!! BTW - they will also be very happy to take a pound coin! Be firm but remember that a pound to you isn't much and it is a very large amount to them, so chill.... My only tip here is that it might be worth having their help out of the airport - check that they are going to take your bag all the way to the bus, sometimes they try to have one chap who takes it from the baggage belt to the door and another who takes it from there - but it is definitely NOT worth having any help when you return to the airport, you will be dropped yards from the security machines.
Sharks Bay is between Naama Bay and the airport, nearer the airport and it's a nice resort - have a look at www.sharksbay.com. You are up nearer to Tiran Island and the Ras Nasrani area. Haven't shoredived up there for a while, but it used to be very good. I suppose it's going to be 15 minutes by taxi into Naama.
You will also see a huge difference in Naama Bay itself - much more developed, truly an international resort now with shopping malls, many restaurants, nightclubs etc The most striking difference to me in the last 5 years, maybe 10 years is that most people who go to Sharm now are not divers or snorkellers.
Anyway, have a fantastic time and do write us a trip report.
All the best
Allie

If you are travelling privately, maybe you might like to consider arranging a meet and greet service with the hotel. I went to Egypt earlier this year and had arranged this sort of service and there was a person to meet us at the plane ; he then tootled off and got the visas whilst I queued at immigration; when I was through immigration he had all my bags on a trolley and we went straight off to the people carrier and off to the hotel. A v civilised way to travel

Hi Carol.
We got back from Sharm a few weeks ago-so just a small point re your visas. As someone said, you'll probably land at the same time as 1 or 2 other jets and you'll all be herded into the arrivals area together. When you go through the doors, you'll see the visa desks on your left hand side. Most people will be directed and see the big English sign on the third visa desk-leaving the first two almost empty-so that's where to head for.The only difference is that the signs above them are in Egyptian. They were $20 US.
And it's worth ?1 for a trolley too.
Have a great holiday.
Cheers Clive.
