View Full Version : PADI/TDI to BSAC
Good afternoon Ladies & Gents,
After serach the forums, i have seen various posts about converting from PADI to BSAC, but none a clear to follow, i also have different expereince that a usual PADI AOW.
Lets Start.
Im a PADI MSD with TDI Advanced Nitrox (upto 100%) and Decompression Procedures. Which allow me to dive to 45m with decompression.
My specilisations consist of Nitrox, Wreck Diving, Cavern Diving, Navigation & Night.
I am also a DAN O2 provider.
I intend to be join the British army next year as an officer. As all there diving is BSAC qualifications. I would like to convert before i join.
What level could i cross over to easily? or What level can i enroll on?
Regards
Paul
Hi Paul,
You don't "convert" as such in that you're not awarded a new BSAC qualification - it just provides a rough guide as to where you are in your diving career and what the next BSAC qualification you can study is. Incidentally it works in reverse, in that I'm not entitled to any sort of PADI card because of my BSAC qualifications, but a PADI instructor doesn't have to teach me from scratch.
So in answer to your question, PADI MSD contains Rescue Diver which is broadly equivalent to BSAC Sports Diver. This means that you can enroll on a BSAC Dive Leader course.
The AN&DP ticket allows you to dive to 45m and accellerate your deco, so obviously you can still do that. BSAC consider this to be roughly equivalent to their ERD course (Link HERE (http://www.bsac.org/page/827/recognised-oc-training.htm)) so you could enroll on a Sports Mixed Gas (ie trimix course) if you wanted to.
Also you could if you're interested start down the instructor route by going on an Instructor Foundation Course (IFC).
Cheers,
Janos

Paul,
You only need to crossover your qualification to a BSAC if you want to continue with the BSAC syllabus. IIRC, PADI MSD is lower than Rescue Diver, so you would only crossover as a BSAC Ocean Diver. However with your TDI certs I would seriously consider Sport Diver equivalency and dive to the limits of your own training. You would not be a Sport Diver. If you wished to train along the BSAC syllabus, I would 'fill the gaps' re BSAC deco training and start on Diver Leader.
Just my view.
Edit: Correction on the MSD thing as it includes RD. Apologies, you would cross over as SD anyway if you wanted further BSAC training.
You have to be a Padi Rescue diver to be a Padi MSD! so he would SALT over to a BSAC Sports Diver.
PADI Open Water Diver certification (or qualifying certification from another organization)
PADI Advanced Open Water Diver certification (or qualifying certification from another organization)
PADI Rescue Diver certification (or qualifying certification from another organization)
50 logged dives
Five PADI Specialty course certifications
Minimum age: 15 years old (12 for Junior Master Scuba Diver)

So sorry old chum, I missed that bit.
I'm a PADI Instructor looking to convert to BSAC. I've looked at the main BSAC site and I note that I've got to complete an instuctor foundation course (IFC) and also be instructed on BSAC values, prinicples, etc.
So, my question is....is the IFC in-water or is it classroom based? or both? Written tests (again) or is my prior course recognised.
Is the conversion a simple process? Can my local BSAC convert me or does it need to a Course Director (sorry about the PADI speak-not sure on the BSAC equavilent).
Thanks.

IFC is part pool, part class room. Two day course.
Has to be booked through head office and is instructed by "instructor trainers".
Yes it is very simple process

And it is a checkbox...
Assuming you go and participate you pass.
It is more of the "Giving you something to take away and work on" as a potential instructor. The skills are evaluated later in the TIE and PIE which you wouldn't need to do.
Thanks both. Appreciated.
