During the last meeting I went to at the dive club, I had to rush away for a 'P' - one of the joys of getting older I suppose - better than the alternative anyway, and when I got back the previous D.O. had resigned and I was the new D.O.! Rotten sods, I thought I had managed to escape that sort of responsibility!
Hmm, I think the worst that can happen has already happened, so it's too late to suggest moving away from a pub for future meetings!
Drat and double drat! :(
And seasons greetings to all! :D

Try to imagine what would have happened if youŽd go for the loo instead.

We voted our last DO in when he was in the middle of the North Sea on a multi day trip having previously said he wasn't going DO.
Generally if you aren't in the meeting or pop out you're likely to come back and find yourself on the committee as nobody else wants to do it.

I was last to arrive at the AGM a year or two ago and became DO

Ahh those joys of being appointed at random... Remember being appointed the social officer and secretary to a club, on my first meeting with the club.. wouldn't mind but i wasn't even a fully qualified diver at the time, i just happened to turn up to the AGM.

What happened to being asked and saying 'no'? ;)I suggested resigning at the last AGM. Time for someone else etc.........They all fell about laughing.
Is being DO meant to be a job for life?

On pervious occasions when asked if I woukld be interested in a position on the comittee, I have found that stating 'I would rather have anthrax' dealt with that issue. ;) Mind you, much respect for those that do.

When I stood down as DO, I changed the AGM dates so the new incumbant only had a six month stint, or thats what I told him, 5 months in he found that he couldn't standdown until he'd found a suitable replacement:eek: , I told him that had been my problem too:D

Being DO teaches you how to be a good negotiator, man manger & devious B******:D

So the answer is no, you just have to find the right replacement, even if they don't know it:D .

In our branch, you have to get the persons standing for branch positions to put themselves forward, and that is confirmed by a signature on a form. They can be encouraged though;) .

I think that it is quite sterile for the same persons to stay on the committee in the same position: whoever does it will run out of ideas for improvement quite quickly, or find that they can't change things as much as they thought they might.

The other point is that if someone has been in a post for a long time, the remainder of the branch come to believe that person will always stay in the post, and don't bother to stand themselves, or even think of themselves as being suitable to apply. Which means that when that person stands down, there is no-one in the branch who will apply.

Our club has a 'three years and move on' policy for committee posts. That works for everything except treasurer, because that post requires a better sort of financial brain, which restricts the applicants.

Amazing how members view of the committee and its methods changes when they are on the committee:D .

The problem here is we mail out 70 forms and very very occasionally get 1 returned, often none.

The result is no competition for places so same members end up doing the post for year on year with no break. Also means that when one does stand down there is nobody to take the place so involves lots of begging in the AGM (or someone going to the toilet).
